can we apply mustard oil on face - #24654

Lucas

I am really struggling with my skin lately and have been thinking about using natural remedies. I heard from a friend that mustard oil could be useful, but I’m not totally sure. Can we apply mustard oil on face? Like, does it actually help with dry skin or even acne, or is it too heavy? I had this weird breakout recently, and my skin has felt flaky and tight. I tried some creams that said they were soothing, but they just made it worse. Then a relative suggested applying mustard oil, saying it’s great for moisture and can help with healing. But I’m hesitating since I remember reading that some oils can clog pores. Also, is there a way to mix it with anything, or should I just go straight for the oil? I want to be careful, cause I really don’t want to make things worse! Can we apply mustard oil on face without causing more problems? Any suggestions or experiences with this?

Yes, mustard oil can be applied to the face, but it’s essential to be cautious and consider your individual skin type and condition. In Ayurveda, mustard oil is known for its warming and stimulating properties, which can be beneficial for dry and flaky skin. Its heavy nature combines with your current condition - it could amplify Pitta or Kapha imbalance, which might not be ideal if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin.

For dry skin that’s not too sensitive, a small, patch test is a good starting point. Apply a tiny amount behind the ear or wrist, waiting for 24 hours to see if any irritation occurs. If it feels okay, you can occasionally use it in diluted form. Blend it with a lighter oil, such as almond or jojoba oil, which can reduce its intensity and still provide moisture. A 1:1 ratio of mustard oil with a lighter oil may be a balanced mix.

Now, for acne-prone or sensitive skin, it’s better to be extra cautious. Mustard oil might be too occlusive or heat-inducing, possibly aggravating acne or sensitivities. Instead, incorporate cooling and soothing ingredients with a history of being gentle on skin. Neem oil or aloe vera gel are excellent alternatives you could try — providing both moisture and antibacterial properties.

As for frequency, using it once or twice a week is probably sufficient, and always at night to avoid sun exposure post-application, since mustard oil can make the skin photosensitive. Also, maintain your skin’s overall health by keeping yourself hydrated and including a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A, D, and E to naturally support skin healing from within.

If irritation occurs, and the breakouts persist, it would be wise to consult a dermatologist for a comprehensive approach to your skin woes.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
