which oil is best for hair thickness - #24736

Elizabeth

I am really struggling with my hair lately. It feels so thin and lifeless! I’ve tried a bunch of stuff, but nothing seems to work. A few weeks ago, I visited a salon and the stylist mentioned how important oils can be for hair thickness, but she didn’t say which oil is best for hair thickness. So now I'm sooo confused. Right now, I'm using a coconut oil blend, but I’m not seeing any real changes. I’ve heard that castor oil can be a game changer for thickness, but then again, I’ve also read that argan oil works wonders too. Like, what’s the deal? Are there other oils? How do I even figure out which oil is best for hair thickness? I’m scared I’m just wasting my time and money. I mean, I just want my hair to look fuller and healthier. If any of you have had similar issues, what oils did you use that actually helped? Thanks a ton!!!

For hair thickness, Ayurveda offers some time-tested oils, and choosing the right one can indeed make a difference. You’re on the right track with coconut oil, as it’s a good base oil, but there may be others more suited for promoting thickness. One of the most recommended oils in Ayurveda for encouraging hair growth and thickness is Bhringraj oil. Known as “Keshraj” or “King of Hair” in Ayurvedic texts, Bhringraj is great for nourishing hair follicles and improving blood circulation to the scalp.

Castor oil is another common choice, not just for thickness but also for its highly moisturizing nature, though it can be a bit sticky. It is rich in ricinoleic acid. Just ensure you’re not overdoing it, as it can be heavy on the scalp. If you choose castor oil, consider mixing it with a lighter oil like an almond oil to make it easier to apply and rinse.

Argan oil is fabulous for adding shine and moisture but might not be as potent for increasing thickness compared to some traditional Indian oils.

When it gets down to other oils, you might also consider Amla oil or Neem oil if your hair issue is tied to scalp health. Neem, in particular, can help with dandruff or scalp infections.

To find what suits you best, try mixing a small amount of any of the mentioned oils with coconut or almond oil, start applying it once a week. Leave it in your scalp for at least an hour or overnight if possible, before washing it out.

Additionally, pay attention to your diet, as deficiencies in protein, iron or omega-3 fatty acids can impact hair health. Ayurvedic praxis encourages including more green leafy veggies, nuts, seeds, lentils, and whole grains.

If there’s no progress and you continue to be concerned, consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for a more tailored approach to your dosha type and constitution. Sometimes custom formulations can make an immense difference.
