how to use henna and indigo powder - #25312

Victoria

I am really confused about how to use henna and indigo powder for my hair. I recently decided to ditch chemical dyes, but it’s been a challenge. A couple of weeks ago, I tried henna, and wow, the color was vibrant but too orange for my liking. Every time I look in the mirror, it feels off. I read somewhere that indigo powder could help darken it, but honestly, how to use henna and indigo powder together seems super tricky. Do I mix them, or use them separately? Some friends told me to wait a few days after using henna before applying indigo, but I’m not too sure about the timing, like how long I should wait. Will it really turn out darker or just muddy??? I've also seen different ratios for mixing them. Ugh, it's quite overwhelming. If anyone has done this combo, I'd love advice! I want that rich dark color, but not end up with a mess on my head! 😩 Thanks in advance!

Starting with henna and indigo for hair dye can definitely seem a bit tricky at first! It’s all about timing and mixing. To get a rich, dark color that’s free of the strong orange tones, you do indeed need to use them separately rather than mixing them together. Let’s break it down.

Firstly, apply henna to your hair. Make sure you’ve created a smooth henna paste (using just water, or you can add some acidic liquid like lemon juice to help release the dye) and let it sit for a few hours before applying it to your hair. You’ll want to keep it on your hair for around 2 to 4 hours, depending on your natural hair color and how vibrant you want the color to be.

After you’ve rinsed the henna out, it’s recommended to wait about 24-48 hours for the color to oxidize fully. This means it can darken slightly and set into your hair properly. This waiting period will ensure that the henna layer is robust before you move on to indigo.

Now, for the indigo! Since you’re looking to darken the vibrant orange tones, you will apply the indigo paste next. Mix the indigo powder with just enough warm water to create a yogurt-like consistency. Allow this paste to sit for about 15-20 minutes until the dye activates. Apply it directly over your henna-colored hair and leave it on for 1-2 hours, depending on how dark you want it.

Some ratios are commonly suggested, like 1:1 if you want a medium brown or 1:2 (henna to indigo) if you’re aiming for a darker shade. Given your aim for a rich dark color, you might lean towards more indigo.

To prevent it from turning muddy, do a test strand first. It’s the easiest way to avoid unexpected mishaps. Remember to coat the hair evenly to avoid patchiness. And importantly, rinse it out thoroughly using just water the first time—not shampoo, as the color sets better without it. Adjust these steps based on your hair texture and needs to refine your results! This process can take a little practice, but it’ll be worth it for a healthier, chemical-free hair color.
