how to apply indigo powder after henna - #25455

Mateo

I am trying to figure out how to apply indigo powder after henna and feeling a bit confused about the whole process. Last week, I decided to do a henna treatment because my hair was looking dull and lifeless, and honestly, I’ve heard so much positive stuff about henna! The color came out beautiful, but now I really want that deep, darker shade that indigo offers. I’ve read that you need to let the henna sit for a while before mixing in the indigo, but like, how exactly do I do that? Do I just mix the indigo with water, or should I add something else? And for how long do I keep the indigo in? I really don’t want to mess this up, but info on how to apply indigo powder after henna seems kinda scattered everywhere. Oh! And did I mention my hair is super, super thick? That makes it even more tricky! I’m also worried about how to maintain color afterwards... any tips on that? Thanks for helping me out!

Applying indigo powder after henna can definitely enhance your hair’s color, offering rich, darker hues. First, let’s break it down step-by-step so it feels less daunting. Since you’ve already done the henna treatment, which is great because henna naturally nourishes the hair, the next steps involve preparing your indigo mix and applying it with care.

Start by ensuring your hair has been rinsed and dried after the henna treatment; this usually means waiting about 24-48 hours post-henna for optimal color release. Henna works by conditioning hair, which can also influence how indigo adheres to your strands.

To prepare the indigo, you’ll need to mix the powder with warm water, aiming for a paste-like consistency reminiscent of yogurt. Since your hair is super thick, you’ll probably need a fairly generous amount of the paste. For added nourishment, you might consider mixing in a pinch of salt, which can help the dye adhere better, although it’s not always necessary.

When it comes to applying, you should work from the roots to the tips, ensuring even coverage. Given your hair’s thickness, sectioning your hair might make the process more manageable. Once applied, cover your hair with a plastic wrap or shower cap - this helps to maintain the warmth necessary for indigo to work effectively.

You typically want to leave the indigo in your hair for about 1 to 2 hours. However, this can vary depending on how intense you want the color; longer sessions could lead to deeper shades. Afterward, rinse your hair thoroughly with water. Avoid shampoo for at least 48 hours, so the indigo fully oxidizes.

For maintaining color, use sulphate-free shampoos to extend the life of the dye and consider oiling your hair weekly with coconut or almond oil to keep it moisturized and vibrant. Lastly, given the Ayurvedic perspective, a balanced diet and proper hydration also contribute to maintaining the health and shine of your hair.

If there’s any irritation or if the indigo doesn’t take as expected, give your hair some rest before attempting again. And like always, patch test any new hair product to ensure it suits your skin and hair type. Hope this gives you clearer direction!
