when to apply indigo after henna - #25907

Claire

I am really confused about my recent hair coloring routine! Last weekend, I decided to try the whole henna thing after hearing so many good things, but now everyone's talking about when to apply indigo after henna. Like, do I have to wait a long time or what? The henna came out super vibrant, but my hair is still a bit too red for my taste, and I was hoping indigo could help tone it down a little. I kept reading different opinions—some say I should wait 24 hours, others 48! Is there something specific I should look for before applying the indigo? Plus, I don’t wanna mess this up and end up with something completely unexpected. I also heard that the final color depends on how I wait after henna, but I kinda lost track of time. 😬 Just really want to get this right, and any advice on when to apply indigo after henna would be great! Thanks sooo much!

Applying indigo after henna is indeed a popular way to achieve darker hair tones and it does help to mitigate the red hues of henna. Ideally, you should allow the henna to fully oxidize before applying indigo. Typically, this takes about 24 to 48 hours after rinsing out the henna from your hair. Waiting this period allows the color from the henna to settle in, providing better depth when indigo is applied.

It’s understandable to feel some confusion with the varying advice out there, but the optimal wait generally varies based on the color intensity you desire and the natural texture and porosity of your hair. If your hair naturally takes color quickly, 24 hours might be sufficient. However, for maximum effectiveness and consistency, 48 hours allows more time for the henna to oxidize completely.

Look for signs that the henna color has “settled”. When rinsing the henna off initially, the color might be more vibrant orange; by the time it fully oxidizes, it should deepen slightly. This indicates a good time to proceed with indigo.

Remember, indigo works best when mixed fresh and applied immediately after preparation because delayed application may affect dye potency. Keep in mind that indigo tends to darken over the first few days post-application, so manage your expectations for immediate results.

Avoid shampooing your hair between henna and indigo applications as it might strip some of the henna color or alter its effectiveness. Instead, rinse with water and perhaps a no-conditioner hair rinse.

Lastly, these are general guidelines and you may also observe what works best for your personal hair type and routine, small trials can sometimes be the best learning experience. Just ensure you provide enough time for each process to complete, and you’ll likely end up with a satisfying result.
