"How to reduce hairfall, dandruff and increase volume" - #26652

Pushpa

I have very dense curly hair, which I love. But maintaining it, is very challengingfor me as my hairs are very frizzy and dull. I have 2c to 3a and 3b type of curls which get tangled very easily, and I loose ton of hair while combing because I have to apply hard force on it. Plus I get seasonal dandruff in rainy and winter days which makes it worse.

Frizziness, tangling, and dandruff in curly hair can be a challenge, but Ayurvedic principles can offer some guidance. First, let’s tackle the frizziness. This usually arrives from dryness, so you might want to incorporate a weekly oil massage with sesame or coconut oil to nourish the scalp and hair. Warm the oil slightly before applying and massage gently, focusing on the scalp. Leave it overnight or for at least an hour before washing off.

To detangle your hair, consider using a wide-toothed comb when your hair is damp or wet, instead than dry. Apply a conditioner before trying to detangle, and use your fingers to gently separate knots first. Amla or Indian gooseberry is great for strengthening hair roots. You can apply amla paste or oil twice a week to prevent hair fall.

For seasonal dandruff, neem oil can be beneficial for its antifungal properties. Mix a few drops of neem oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil. Apply it directly to the scalp, particularly in the areas where dandruff is more pronounced. Leave it for 30 minutes to an hour before rinsing.

When washing, use a mild sulfate-free shampoo, preferably herbal. Avoid hot water, which can further dry out your hair, and rinse with lukewarm water. You could try adding a final rinse with a mix of apple cider vinegar and water to balance the scalp’s pH level and add shine.

Ayurvedic diet can also play a role in managing hair health. Include hair-friendly foods like almonds, walnuts, spinach, and carrots. These provide essential nutrients that support hair strength and vitality. Drink plenty of water and herbal teas – hibiscus tea in particular has been connected to healthy hair.

Limit the use of heat styling tools, reduce the exposure to harsh chemicals or treatments, and try to manage stress with yoga or meditation, which can also help in long-term hair health. If your hair fall is excessive or dandruff persists, consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner personally can be helpful to tailor recommendations to your unique prakriti and condition.

To address frizziness, dullness, and hairfall in curly hair, we can look at balancing your doshas, as this often reflects imbalances in Vata and Pitta. For frizziness, hydrate the hair with a weekly warm oil massage using coconut or sesame oil. Warm a little oil, carefully massaging it into your scalp and running through your hair. Leave it overnight if possible, and wash off with a mild herbal shampoo. Be mindful to avoid excessively hot water while washing as it can worsen frizz.

Regarding tangles and hair loss, use a wide-tooth comb and start detangling from the ends, moving upward gently. This minimizes unnecessary force applied to the scalp. Keeping your hair moisturized can also reduce tangles and breakage. Apply a natural conditioner or whipped shea butter blend after washing your hair. Avoid over-shampooing; twice a week is typically enough for curly hair types.

For seasonal dandruff, try neem-leaf paste to purify the scalp. Grind fresh or dried neem leaves with water, apply it to the scalp, and rinse after 30 minutes. This can be used once every fortnight during dandruff-prone seasons. However, if dandruff persists, it may require medical attention as underlying causes should be ruled out.

Diet can influence hair health substantially. Favor fresh fruits, leafy greens, nuts, and seeds to support your hair. Drink plenty of warm water and herbal teas to support hydration and digestion. These small steps, tailored to Ayurveda’s principles, might help support healthier, more manageable hair.
