Hair loss postpartum is quite common, especially around 6-12 months after delivery even though the anxiety it causes is real. This happens due to hormonal changes when estrogen levels, which remain high during pregnancy, drop suddenly after childbirth. In your case, hypothyroidism could be also contributing to your hair loss.

First, it’s crucial to support healthy digestion and assimilation, as poor digestion weakens nutrient absorption, which can affect hair health. Balance your agni by including warm, cooked foods, avoiding cold or heavy meals. Favor pit rasa foods like ginger, cumin, and pepper, which kindles digestion and supports healthy metabolism. With hypothyroidism, it’s helpful to avoid raw greens like kale and cabage that may affect thyroid function.

Your daily regime can include Ayurvedic herbs such as Amalaki, which is rich in Vitamin C and supports hair growth, and Bhringraj, known as ‘king of herbs’ for hair, can be used as oil or internally as powder. Applying Bhringraj oil on the scalp once or twice a week can nourish hair follicles and encourage healthier hair growth.

Additionally, consider including sesame oil in your diet, as it’s beneficial for vata dosha, which often gets aggravated postpartum leading to dryness and hair fall. Consuming a teaspoon of sesame oil daily or using it in cooking can support lubrication and nourishment of tissues.

To manage the stress and anxiety from the hair fall, pramayama techniques such as Sheetali breathing helps calm the mind and reduces tension. Practice for 5-10 minutes daily, ensuring a sense of relaxation. Adequate sleep, at least 7-8 hour a night, also plays a vital role in recovery and wellbeing; try to rest when your baby rests to keep up with your sleep need.

Since you have hypothyroidism, keep in consultation with your endocrinologist to ensure your medication is working effectively. Any imbalance could intensify hair fall. If hair loss seems severe or persists, consulting with a holistic practitioner or dermatologist might provide more personalized intervention.

Hair loss postpartum is quite common due to hormonal changes, even more so if you’re managing hypothyroidism. Let’s look at this from a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective. Both factors influence your doshas and dhatus, disrupting balance. You may be experiencing an imbalance of Vata and potentially Pitta, which affects your hair’s health.

Firstly, focus on pacifying Vata to reduce stress. Daily Abhyanga (oil massage) with warm sesame or coconut oil can be very beneficial—apply it gently onto your scalp and let it sit for about 30 minutes before washing it off. This not only nourishes and strengthens but also calms the nervous system.

Diet-wise, ensure it’s balanced and tailored to support your recovery. Incorporate warm, cooked foods with healthy fats like ghee, promoting the necessary nourishment for hair growth. Ayurveda recommends herbs like Brahmi and Ashwagandha for their adaptogenic properties—they can help with stress and overall hormonal balance, which may reduce hair fall.

Hypothyroidism-specific, continued adherence to your medication is critical. It would be unwise to alter anything without direction from your healthcare provider managing this condition. To nurture your metabolism (or Agni), eat small meals frequently including foods rich in iodine like seaweed in moderated amounts.

Regularly, ensure your sleep is adequate and follow a consistent routine. Avoid harsh chemical treatments or even frequent washing of the hair, which can strain the follicles. If your condition worsens or the hair loss doesn’t improve over time, it’s essential to consult with a doctor for potential underlying issues like nutritional deficiency or adjustments to your thyroid management plan.
