how to apply curd on hair - #35974

Jackson

I am looking for some advice about how to apply curd on hair because I’ve been dealing with really dry and frizzy hair lately. Like, it’s gotten to the point where I dread the brush; it just tangles and breaks so easily! A friend suggested using curd, and I’m super curious, but honestly, I have no clue how to apply curd on hair properly. Do I just slap it on or what? I’ve tried so many things like different conditioners, oils, even those fancy serums, but nothing seems to work. I’ve read that curd is good for moisturizing and promoting hair health, but I don't want to mess it up! Also, does it need to be full-fat curd or can I use low-fat? Like, does that even matter? And one more thing, how long should I leave it on? My hair is so damaged; I really want it to work. Oh, and what about washing it out later? Should I use shampoo or just rinse with water? Any tips on how to make the whole curd on hair process easy and effective would be amazing! Thanks so much!

Applying curd to your hair can indeed be a beneficial remedy for dryness and frizz. Let’s approach this step-by-step for clarity and effectiveness. Curd, known as ‘Dahi’ in Ayurveda, is revered for its moisturizing properties, helping to balance Vata dosha, which is often associated with dryness and brittleness of hair.

Start by selecting the right type of curd. Full-fat curd is preferred because it generally possess more nutrients and fats essential for nourishing dry hair. While low-fat curd will also provide benefits, it may not be as effective in combating severe dryness.

To apply the curd, take an adequate amount based on your hair length. For this, you’ll want slightly wet hair as it helps with the application. Place curd in a bowl, then using your fingers or a brush, gently start applying from roots to tips. Make sure each strand is covered, but you don’t need to drench your hair in meduim. Some people prefer mixing a few drops of olive oil or honey with curd, which can enhance the moisture content and add shine.

Leave it on for about 20 to 30 minutes. Sitting with curd longer doesn’t typically increase its effects, and leaving it too long can be tricky to wash out. Next, you’ll want to rinse it off with cool or lukewarm water; hot water might curdle the curd making it trickier to remove. Follow up with a mild, sulfate-free shampoo to ensure no residue is left behind and effectively cut through the dairy’s smell.

Some additional tips: try to apply once a week or once every two weeks if hair is extremely dry. Also, avoid using curd on scalp if you are prone to cold, as it’s known to have a cooling effect. Finally, always remember, while curd can significantly help, it might not be a magical cure. Consistent, holistic hair care aligned with your dosha will provide the best long-term results.

Applying curd to your hair can be an effective traditional remedy for dry and frizzy hair. It’s a simple process, but to get the best benefits, there are a few things to keep in mind. Curd is renowned for its moisturizing and conditioning properties; it can help squelch frizz and enhance your hair’s overall health.

Here’s how you can apply it properly. First, use full-fat curd if possible, as it contains more fats and proteins that are beneficial for nourishing your hair. Before you start, make sure your hair is detangled and damp. You might want to wet it slightly with a spray bottle if it’s dry. Now, take about one cup of curd (adjust according to hair length), and start applying it from the scalp to the tips. It’s better to section your hair for even application.

Massage the curd gently into your scalp, because it can also help calm scalp irritations and balance natural oils. Apply generously to the ends which are usually more dry and damaged. You don’t need to let your hair soak in curd for too long; about 30 minutes to an hour is enough.

When it comes time to rinse it out, using a mild shampoo is advisable. While you can just rinse with water, a gentle shampoo will help remove any residual smell or heaviness. Make sure the water is not too hot as this can dry out the hair.

Repeat this treatment once a week if your hair is very dry. Also, integrating a few drops of lemon juice or honey to the curd can add additional benefits, such as shine or antibacterial properties. The goal is to restore moisture and shine without overloading your hair with commercial products, which it seems you’ve tried without success.

Incorporating curd into your hair care routine, alongside a diet that supports healthy hair, can bring noticeable improvements. Stick with it and watch how your hair responds. If any issues persists, consider a consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner to explore underlying imbalance in your doshas (like Pitta or Vata) that might be causing hair issues, and to get more tailored advice.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
