is dahi good for hair - #37395

Logan

I am really curious about something — is dahi good for hair? I’ve been dealing with this annoying hair fall for a while now. It feels like every time I brush my hair, there are handfuls of it coming out! 😩 I've tried different shampoos, and even some fancy conditioners that the influencers swear by, but nothing seems to work. A friend mentioned using dahi because of its natural properties, but honestly, I’m kinda skeptical. Last week, I made this dahi mask, you know, just plain yogurt with some honey and olive oil. Made a mess in the kitchen, but whatever lol! 🤪 I left it on for about 30 mins and honestly, my hair felt softer, but I’m not sure if that's just the moisturizing effect. After rinsing it out, I felt like it was shiny, but can dahi really help with preventing hair fall or promoting growth? Also, I’m not really sure how often to use it. Like, should I be doing this every week or will that just make things greasy? And is there a specific type of dahi that’s better for hair? Regular store-bought or should I be looking for something like homemade from the health food store? I really want to know, is dahi good for hair or am I just wasting my time? Any thoughts would be super helpful!

Dahi, or yogurt, indeed have beneficial properties for hair health according to Ayurveda. It contains proteins and vitamins that can nourish both the hair and the scalp. The lactic acid in yogurt has cleansing properties that can help open clogged pores, facilitate hair growth promotion and reduce hair fall over time. By providing essential nutrients, it strengthens the roots, potentially alleviating some symptoms of hair fall.

Your concoction with honey and olive oil is a good start, as these ingredients also possess moisturizing properties. Honey is humectant, which draws moisture into the hair, while olive oil adds additional softness. However, the effectiveness of a dahi hair mask depends on consistant use and ensuring it’s suitable for your particular dosha imbalance, if any exists.

For optimal results, consider applying a dahi hair mask once a week. Using it too often might lead to greasy hair, especially if your hair type naturally tends toward oiliness. When applying, massage gently but thoroughly into your scalp and comb through to ensure even distribution. Leave it for 20–30 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. As for the type of dahi, homemade or fresh, unflavored yogurt is preferable over store-bought, which sometimes contains preservatives and sugars not beneficial for your hair.

Also recognize that hair loss can have several roots causes, such as hormonal imbalance, stress and dietary insufficiencies. It’s important to complement any topical treatments with internal balance. Ayurveda emphasizes consuming a balanced, nourishing diet; ensuring enough protein and iron intake, practicing stress reduction techniques and avoiding excessive chemicals on the hair.

For your specific issue of hair fall, it may be helpful to have your prakriti (natural constitution) and vikriti (current state) assessed by an Ayurvedic practitioner, who can offer targeted recommendations based on your dosha. In cases of excessive hair loss, further medical consultation is wise to rule out underlying health problems that might require different interventions.

Dahi, or yogurt, indeed has some beneficial properties for hair health, but let’s delve into whether it can address your specific concern of hair fall. In Siddha-Ayurvedic terms, hair fall could be related to imbalances in your doshas, particularly Pitta dosha. Dahi is cooling in nature and helps to pacify Pitta, which might reduce hair fall when used appropriately.

Yogurt nourishes the hair due to its proteins and probiotics. These elements can strengthen hair strands and provide a soothing effect to the scalp, reducing dryness and dandruff, which are also factors contributing to hair fall. However, addressing hair fall more effectively might require looking into diet, stress, and overall health (including possible underlying conditions).

For your dahi mask, it seems you’re already on the right track with a blend of yogurt, honey, and olive oil to enhance hydration. Typically, applying this mask once a week should suffice. While it adds shine and softness, singular use won’t entirely prevent hair fall if the root causes aren’t addressed. Ensure the yogurt you use is plain and unsweetened. Homemade dahi is excellent but a good quality store-bought, plain yogurt should work too.

Besides the masks, consuming dahi can also support your hair from within. Including it in your diet, say with a meal or as a lassi, helps maintain the Pitta balance internally, which could contribute to scalp health and indirectly support hair strength. Also, reduce spicy, oily, and acidic foods since they aggravate Pitta. If hair fall persists or worsens, it could be beneficial to seek consultation with a healthcare professional to investigate other possible health issues like nutritional deficiencies.
