how to increase hair volume and thickness - #37413

Elizabeth

I am really struggling with my hair lately. It feels so flat and lifeless, like no matter what I do, I can’t get it to have any volume or thickness. For the past few months, I've noticed my hair seems to be thinning a bit. I mean, I used to have this thick, wavy hair everyone envied, and now, it’s just kind of there. It’s honestly driving me a bit nuts! I've tried a bunch of shampoos that claim they can help with how to increase hair volume and thickness, but nothing seems to work. I even went to a salon, and they told me to try some high-end stuff, but it didn’t really change anything. I feel like I’ve wasted so much time and money. I’ve read that diet can play a huge role, too, and I've been trying to add more proteins and vitamins, but I don’t know if that's enough. I’m wondering if there's something specific in Ayurveda that can really help me understand how to increase hair volume and thickness naturally? Are there certain oils or herbs you guys recommend? Or maybe specific routines to follow? I’ve heard about using coconut oil and fenugreek, but how do I actually use them? Should I do hot oil treatments or what? Any help would really mean the world to me.

Hair volume and its natural thickness can often connect back to one’s dosha balance, diet, and lifestyle choices, as Ayurveda emphasizes these aspects a lot. Your situation could possibly indicate an imbalance in the Vata dosha, because Vata governs movement and dryness, which can affect hair health. To help improve your hair situation, let’s consider some Ayurvedic remedies:

1. Herbal Oils & Treatments: Ayurvedic oils such as Bhringraj (Eclipta Alba), Amla (Indian Gooseberry), and Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) are time-tested for their hair-thickening properties. You can mix these with a carrier oil like coconut or sesame. Applying this warm oil onto your scalp massaging it gently, once or twice a week before washing. Leave it in for at least 30 minutes or even overnight, if possible.

2. Fenugreek Seeds (Methi) Paste: Fenugreek is another fabulous remedy. Soak a few tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. In the morning, grind them into a paste, apply it to your hair and scalp and let it sit for about 30-45 minutes before rinsing with water. Use it once a week for the best results.

3. Ayurvedic Diet: Food plays a vital role in supporting hair health. Consider incorporating more hair-friendly nutrients like proteins, iron, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids into your diet. Foods like lentils, almonds, seeds, leafy greens, and berries can support thickening.

4. Bhringraj and Amla Powder: You may consider taking one teaspoon of Bhringraj powder mixed with amla powder in warm water, twice a day after meals. These can help internally nourishes your hair roots, support growth and prevent thinning.

5. Practice Healthy Habits: Reduce stress through mindfulness, yoga or meditation, as stress impacts Vata balance and can contribute to hair loss.

Please note, if symptoms persist beyond utilizing these natural treatments, it might be worth consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner or a dermatologist for personalized guidance.

To address hair thinning and lack of volume from a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, it’s important to look at your overall prakriti (body constitution) and current dosha imbalances, especially focusing on vata and pitta doshas, which can affect hair health. Frequently, hair concerns can be linked to an imbalance in these doshas or issues with the agni (digestive/metabolic fire) which affects the nourishment of the hair as a tissue.

Start with your diet, as it’s a foundational aspect. Balance your vata and pitta by including more warming and grounding foods. Incorporate whole grains, nuts, seeds, leafy greens, and fruits like pomegranates. Hydration is essential too, so ensure you’re drinking plenty of water to maintain scalp health.

Now, regarding oils and herbs, coconut oil is indeed beneficial. Use it for regular scalp massages, which enhance circulation and nourishment to the hair follicles. Warm the coconut oil slightly before use (never too hot; just comfortable to touch) and massage your scalp gently to avoid breakage. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes before washing it out with a mild Ayurvedic shampoo.

Fenugreek (methi) is another useful herb. Soak 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds overnight in water. The next day, grind them into a paste. This paste can be applied to your scalp and hair, leave for about 30 minutes before washing off. This encourages thicker hair by nourishing the follicles and strengthening hair from the roots.

Consider using bhringraj oil, renowned in Ayurveda for promoting hair growth and increasing volume. Apply this oil in a similar way to the coconut oil to gain benefits over time. Additionally, amla (Indian gooseberry) can be used both externally and internally. Applying amla oil onto the scalp or consuming amla juice can enhance hair volume and strength.

As hair concerns can sometimes reflect underlying health issues, ensure a balanced lifestyle with stress-management techniques like yoga or meditation. If your hair continues to thin or if you’re experiencing any new symptoms, seeking attention from a healthcare provider is crucial to rule out other conditions. This holistic approach, aligning with Ayurvedic principles, should progressively help revitalize your hair naturally.
