how to care hair at home - #38175

Lucas

I am really struggling with my hair lately and I don't know what to do anymore. I used to have nice and shiny hair, but now it's constantly frizzy and dry. I’ve tried a few store-bought products but honestly, they just don’t seem to work. Recently, I started thinking about how to care hair at home instead of relying on all those chemical-laden products. Last week, I went to a beauty salon, and they suggested I should do a deep conditioning treatment, but honestly, I can’t afford that every week! I’ve looked online for remedies, but there’s just too much info and I feel overwhelmed. I read about oiling, but like, what type of oils should I even use? Coconut oil is a buzz word in this but then I heard olive oil can also work wonder. Which is better in terms of how to care hair at home? Also, I’m not sure about the best ways to wash it. I feel like I might be shampooing it way too often or maybe not enough? A friend told me to leave conditioner on longer, but is that really needed? I just wanna find a few simple and natural solutions for everyday care. Just feel kinda lost here! Any tips or personal experiences would be super helpful!

Hair care can indeed become quite the conundrum, especially with an abundance of recommendations floating around. Let’s simplify things a bit focusing on an Ayurvedic perspective which has long emphasized natural, self-sustained solutions that are gentle on the hair.

For starters, oils are a fantastic way to replenish moisture and provide nourishment. Coconut oil is often hailed in Ayurveda for its cooling and moisturizing properties; it’s especially beneficial if you tend to have a pitta imbalance with dryness and frizziness. Olive oil, on the other hand, is slightly heating but very nourishing—it helps strengthen the hair shaft. You might want to alternate between these two, depending on how your hair responds.

A good practice is to apply a warm oil massage to your scalp and hair about an hour before you shower, two or three times a week. Gently warm the oil and massage it, using your fingertips, into the scalp. It helps if the room is warm too; the increased temperature will allow the oil to penetrate better, enhancing the treatment. Allow the oil to sit for at least 30 minutes before washing it out.

When it comes to washing, you want to minimize the disruption to your hair’s natural oil balance. Using a gentle, SLS-free shampoo is advisable. You don’t need to wash your hair too frequently — for most, 2-3 times a week is sufficient unless your scalp gets noticeably oily. Over-washing can indeed strip natural oils, leading to increased dryness and frizz.

As for conditioner, choose a natural one and yes, leaving it on for an extra minute or two can indeed help smoother out frizz. Ensure that during rinsing, you use lukewarm water—not hot—as high temperatures can exacerbate dryness.

Finally, incorporating a few dietary and lifestyle habits can do wonders. Hyderation is key; make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day. Also, including foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, like flaxseeds and walnuts, can help improve hair texture.

These steps provide a holistic and manageable starting point to revive your hair, using Ayurvedic principles that nourish from root to tip. Be patient as natural remedies take time to sho.

When it comes to transforming dry, frizzy hair back to its natural shine, diving into home remedies inspired by Siddha-Ayurveda can be really beneficial. Your concerns about using store-bought chemical products are quite valid, and a more natural routine might serve you better. First off, oil massage is a cornerstone of Ayurvedic hair care and is effective for most doshic imbalances affecting the hair.

Coconut oil is indeed highly recommended because it penetrates the hair shaft better than many oils, helping moisturize and reduce protein loss. However, olive oil can also be effective, particularly for scalp health due to its nutrient profile. Alternate between these to see which your hair responds to best. Warm the oil slightly (not too hot, just warm to the touch) and massage into the scalp for about 10 to 15 minutes, ideally letting it sit for an hour before rinsing.

On the topic of washing, if hair feels overly dry, reduce shampooing to no more than two to three times a week. Use a mild, natural shampoo and try a rice water rinse occasionally for enhanced shine and strength. Make sure not to use extremely hot water as it can strip away essential oils. Conditioning is important, but a balanced approach is best—leaving it on for about two to five minutes is sufficient more often than not.

Additionally, a diet high in fresh fruits, leafy greens, and nuts, like almonds and walnuts, supports hair health from the inside out by nourishing the sapta dhatus (particularly the asthi dhatu, or bone tissue, which is connected to hair health). If hair issues persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional to explore potential underlying imbalances or nutrient deficiencies.

In summary, gently oil your hair with warm coconut or olive oil, modify your washing regimen, and consider dietary support for lasting results. Adjustments to your routine may help bring your hair back to its natural condition.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
