what happens when we apply curd on hair - #38556

Kennedy

I am kinda freaking out about my hair lately. I've been hearing so much about natural remedies and saw this thing on Instagram about applying curd on hair, but I'm honestly not sure what it really does. Like, does it really work? I tried it last week because my hair has been super dry and frizzy. I mean, I just smeared some curd all over my scalp and hair while I was rushing to cook dinner! 😅 I left it on for like 30 minutes, then washed it out, but I don’t know if I did it right? Afterward, my hair felt a bit softer, but I also noticed it was kinda heavy, maybe too oily? Should I be using a specific amount of curd, or doing something before or after applying? And, like, what happens when we apply curd on hair on a regular basis? Is it just a one-time miracle or will I have to keep up with this? My friends say different things; some say it's great for dandruff while others said it can make your roots too oily! Ugh. Just need some advice from actual experts here. Anyone tried this with good or bad results?? Please help! 🙏✨

Applying curd on hair can indeed be beneficial because it is rich in nutrients like vitamins B5 and D, proteins, and healthy fats that can nourish your hair and scalp. In Ayurveda, curd is respected for its cooling properties and its ability to bring moisture back into dry, frizzy hair while balancing your scalp’s pH level. Your experience of feeling softer hair is quite common, but it’s also important to acknowledge the heaviness or oiliness you felt – this can often happen if you use too much curd or don’t rinse it out thoroughly.

For a proper Ayurvedic approach, you should consider using a moderate quantity of curd, about 2 to 4 tablespoons, depending on your hair length and volume. It’s advisable to apply curd to damp hair, which allows it to spread more evenly and absorb better into your strands. Before application, gently detangle your hair to make sure it spreads evenly.

You can add a squeeze of lemon juice or a few drops of essential oil like lavender to reduce the potential heaviness and add a pleasant aroma. Curd can be left on for 20-30 minutes – try not to go beyond that as it can solidify and become difficult to remove. Rinse it out with cool water, followed by a mild shampoo if your hair feels too oily. Regularly using curd once a week is usually sufficient for moisture balance.

As for frequency, if you notice excessive oiliness afterwards, it may be wise to adjust application frequency or how long you leave it on. Long-term benefits can include improved texture, reduced frizz, and potentially less dandruff due to its antibacterial effects. Yet, if you have a naturally oily scalp, you might consider applying curd less frequently or focusing more on the length of your hair rather the roots.

Keep in mind, each person’s prakriti (body constitution) and hair type is unique, so results can vary. Monitor how your hair responds and adjust as needed – Ayurveda recognizes this individual difference. If persistent issues occur, consult an Ayurvedic health professional for a more personalized regimen.

Applying curd to your hair can indeed be beneficial, though it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, we look at the properties of the substances we use, and curd is known to be cooling and nourishing. When you apply curd, it’s the cooling and moisturizing properties that help manage dryness and frizz, offering your hair a soft texture. However, overuse or misapplication might leave your hair feeling too heavy or oily.

Curd contains lactic acid, which helps cleanse the scalp, and its protein content nourishes the hair shaft. For someone experiencing dry and frizzy hair, using curd can be quite helpful. It aids in balancing the Pitta element which may cause dryness and inflammation in the scalp. Mixing curd with herbs like fenugreek or curry leaves may further reduce frizziness and promote hair growth.

To do it right, consider these steps: Before applying curd, ensure your hair is slightly damp; it helps absorption without making it too watery. Use about 3-4 tablespoons, which may vary depending on your hair length. Apply it mainly to the scalp if you’re targeting dandruff and hair shaft if you’re focused on conditioning. Leaving it on for around 30 minutes sounds quite reasonable, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Follow up with a mild shampoo if your hair seems too oily afterward.

Regular application, say once a week, can be part of a balanced hair-care regime. However, it’s essential to listen to your hair. If it starts feeling too heavy or greasy, try reducing the amount or frequency. Everyone’s hair reacts differently based on their prakriti (body constitution) and current dosha imbalances, so adjusting method may be necessary.

If dandruff is a concern, you might observe some improvement with consistent use of curd because it helps soothe and lightly exfoliate the scalp. Still, should it persist, especially alongside symptoms like itching or hair loss, seeking an in-person consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner is advisable for a tailored approach. Taking these few customization steps while applying curd on your hair can make a significant difference in effectiveness and comfort, so please experiment and adjust as needed!
