how to use vinegar for hair - #39309

Isabella

I am really confused about how to use vinegar for hair because I've been hearing a lot about it lately. My friend told me that it can help with dandruff and make hair shine, but I’ve also read some negative stuff that made me unsure. Like, last month I tried this new shampoo and it turned my scalp super flaky and itchy, ugh! I really don’t wanna mess my hair up more if I start using vinegar. Last week, I just decided to give it a go and bought apple cider vinegar, but now I'm not sure where to start. Do I apply it straight up or mix it with water? And how do I even apply it? After shampoo? Before? I tried it once but was too nervous and just put a little into my rinse water. Didn't notice much difference tho. Do I have to use it every wash to see any results? Also, I've heard some peeps say it smells pretty bad, like a salad dressing nightmare. Is that true? Like am I gonna come out of the shower smelling like I spilled a vinaigrette all over my head? 😅 If anyone’s got tips or tricks on how to use vinegar for hair, I would really appreciate the help!

Using vinegar, particularly apple cider vinegar (ACV), for hair is a common practice in both traditional and modern haircare. It’s often recommended to support a healthy scalp, address dandruff issues, and give shine to hair. But it’s essential to use it correctly to reap these benefits without causing irritation, especially if you’ve a history of scalp sensitivity like you mentioned. Let’s get into the specifics of how you can use it without worries:

First, it’s recommended to never use ACV directly on your scalp or hair due to its acidity, which can be too harsh when not diluted. Instead, mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of ACV with 1 cup of water. This will make it gentler on your scalp while still effective.

As for when to use it, you can apply this diluted solution after you’ve shampooed and rinsed your hair. Pour the mixture slowly over your scalp and hair, ensuring even distribution. Massage it gently into your scalp, and allow it a couple of minutes to penetrate. Then, rinse it out thoroughly with water. This method helps remove residue from shampoos and conditioners, which may be causing that flakiness and itchiness you experienced.

In terms of frequency, begin by using it once a week so your scalp can slowly adjust. If you find it beneficial, you can gradually increase usage to twice a week. Don’t overdo it though, as using ACV too often may cause your scalp to dry out or become irritated.

Yes, ACV does have a distinct smell, but when diluted, it shouldn’t linger too long post-washing. If you find the scent strong, rinse your hair well with water after the ACV rinse, and consider using a lightly scented conditioner post-rinse for added fragrance, if you like.

Remember, everyone’s hair and scalp are different. If you notice any irritation or discomfort, discontinue use and check proprly if mixture proportion was appropriate. But with these tips, you should be able to safely incorporate this into your hair care routine!

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
