Ayurveda, with its deep roots in tradition, often recommends hair oils as part of a comprehensive hair care regimen. The idea is not just to provide moisture but to balance doshas, especially when there’s a vitiation in Vata and Pitta. Everyone’s body constitution (prakriti) is unique, and hair oiling should be personalized accordingly.

Hair oils, like bhringraj, amla, or coconut oil infused with herbs, can be quite beneficial. They nourish the hair shaft, calm the mind, and even pacify erratic doshas when used correctly. However, it is crucial to know your dosha to select the right oil and method of application.

For those with Vata imbalance, warm sesame oil can be soothing as it deeply nourishes dry and brittle hair. For Pitta, cooling oils like bhringraj or amla might reduce excessive heat that can lead to hair fall. Kapha types may benefit from lighter oils, applied less frequently to avoid aggravating the naturally oily scalp.

Apply a small amount of oil and gently massage it into the scalp. Do this once or twice a week as a part of your routine, preferably a few hours before washing or even overnight. A warm towel wrap or gentle steam can enhance absorption—just be mindful not to overdo, as too much oil may indeed lead to clogging if your scalp is already oily.

It’s all about balance. While it’s true that over-oiling or using the wrong type can cause issues, properly chosen Ayurvedic oils often restore harmony. Also, the ritual of massage itself can be calming, reducing stress, which indirectly benefits your hair health too.

Keep in mind, though, if you have any specific scalp conditions, consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new regimen to ensure safety.
