why is hair falling out - #39744

Logan

I am really freaking out right now because I can't stop thinking about why is hair falling out on my head. Like, a couple of months ago I noticed more hair in my brush and on my pillow, but I thought, "meh, it happens." But now, it feels like every time I wash my hair, I’m losing handfuls!!! Also, I’ve been really stressed out lately with work and family stuff, and that can't help, right?? I mean, could that stress be the reason? I tried some over-the-counter shampoos that claimed to stop hair loss, but nothing seems to work. I even Googled why is hair falling out and found so many different reasons like hormonal changes?? I’m not sure if I’m just freaking myself out, but what if there’s something really wrong with me?? A few friends suggested I should try Ayurvedic solutions, so I’m here, hoping to find some wisdom. Like, are there specific herbs or treatments that can really help with why is hair falling out? And what about my diet? Am I missing something important that could be causing this? I just want my hair to be healthy again and not end up bald or something. Any tips or experiences you guys might have would be super helpful!

Hair fall is indeed distressing, and can stem from various causes including stress, which you’ve mentioned. Stress can indeed exacerbate hair loss because it disturbs your body’s balance and may lead to a condition known as telogen effluvium, where an increased number of hair follicles enter the resting phase. This results in more hair shedding than usual. You’re right to consider hormonal changes too, they can play a significant role, especially if you’ve noticed other symptoms such as changes in your menstrual cycle, unexplained weight gain or loss, or fatigue.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, hair fall is often related to an imbalance in the body’s doshas, particularly Pitta dosha, which governs metabolism and transformation in the body. With stress, poor diet, or certain lifestyle choices, pitta can become aggravated, leading to increased hair loss. Here are a few strategies you could consider:

1. Dietary Adjustments: Incorporating foods that balance Pitta and promote hair health can be beneficial. Ensure you’re consuming enough natural sources of iron, such as leafy greens, beetroots, and pomegranates. Increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseeds or walnuts, which support hair strength. Avoid spicy, oily, and fermented foods, which may aggravate Pitta.

2. Herbal Oils and Massages: Regularly massaging your scalp with Ayurvedic oils like Bhringraj oil or Amla oil can help nourish the hair roots. Warm the oil, gently massage it into your scalp, leave it in for at least an hour or overnight, then wash it out with herbal shampoo.

3. Herbs and Supplements: Consider taking herbal supplements like Ashwagandha and Brahmi, which support stress reduction and overall health. Triphala may help detoxify and balance the body, promoting healthier hair growth.

4. Lifestyle Changes: Practice yoga, meditation, or pranayama to help manage stress levels. Establish a daily routine that allows adequate rest, minimizing mental and physical strain.

If your hair loss persists or occurs along with other symptoms, consider consulting with a healthcare professional for a more comprehensive examination. Hair loss can sometimes be a symptom of an underlying condition that needs attention.
