can we put olive oil on hair - #39850

Lily

I am super confused about hair care lately! I've been hearing a lot about different oils for hair and just the other day my friend was raving about how olive oil has worked wonders for her. I’ve got really dry, frizzy hair and, honestly, I’m kinda desperate to try just about anything. The thing is, can we put olive oil on hair? I mean, like, is it a good idea or just another trendy topic that’ll fizzle out? Last week, I tried a store-bought moisturizing treatment, but my hair didn’t really feel any different. It still looks all lifeless and dull. Then I stumbled upon this old recipe that suggested using olive oil, but am I gonna end up with greasy hair? I don’t want my hair smelling weird or feeling heavy or anything. Also, how exactly do you apply it? Do I need to like heat it up first or just slather it on straight from the bottle? Oh and should I use it as a treatment, like leave it in for awhile, or just a quick rub before washing it out? Really looking for advice from y’all on whether putting olive oil on hair is something I should do! Thanks!

Yes, olive oil can be applied to the hair, and it’s quite effective especially for dry, frizzy hair. In Ayurveda, oils are a critical component of hair care, often used for their nourishing and moisturizing properties. Olive oil is known for its ability to condition hair deeply, lock in moisture, and enhance shine. It contains essential fatty acids and antioxidants that benefit hair health, potentially helping with dryness and frizz by smoothing the hair cuticle and providing a protective barrier.

Before rushing to pour it on your head, consider the potential outcomes. First, you’ll want to start with a small amount to gauge how your hair responds. It’s easy to end up with greasy strands if you overapply. Here’s a simple guide to use it:

1. Quantity: Use 1-2 tablespoons, depending on your hair length and thickness. Opt for extra-virgin olive oil as it has the most nutrients.

2. Application: Warm the oil slightly (don’t overheat), then massage it into your scalp and work it down to the ends. Enjoy the relaxation, this will help increase blood flow and nourish your hair roots.

3. Treatment: Once applied, leave the oil in your hair for a minimum of 30 minutes. For deeper conditioning, you can wrap your hair in a warm towel and let it sit longer; some prefer to keep it overnight, especially if the hair is exceptionally dry.

4. Washing out: Shampoo thoroughly to ensure there’s no oily residue left, which could weigh your hair down.

It’s true that there’s a chance of your hair feeling greasy if not washed out properly, so make sure to cleanse adequately. This treatment can be done once a week , more if your hair truly demands it.

Although olive oil itself generally doesn’t cause undesirable smell, essential oils like lavender or rosemary can be added for fragrance if you wish. Keep in mind, results might vary depending on your hair type, and you’ll need to assess its effects individually. If your hair remains lifeless despite this effort, consider reviewing your diet too, as internal nourishment plays a huge role in hair health.

Yes, using olive oil on hair can be beneficial, especially for dry, frizzy hair like yours. In Siddha-Ayurvedic practices, oiling is a revered tradition that aligns with balancing the doshas and nourishing the tissues of the body, including the scalp and hair. Olive oil, known for its moisturizing properties, can help increase softness and manageability. It may not be just a temporary trend, but rather a time-tested method with roots in various traditional healthcare system.

The key is how you apply it. For the best results, it’s usually a good idea to warm the oil slightly; it should be just warm to the touch, not hot. This enhances absorption into the scalp and hair shafts, promoting better nourishment. Apply the oil evenly to your hair and scalp, massaging gently in circular motions. This stimulates blood circulation and can help rejuvenate the hair growth process.

Let the oil absorb into your hair for about 30 minutes to an hour. if you have time, leaving it overnight with a protective covering like a towel or shower cap can be even more effective. Arinising it out with warm water and shampoo should help prevent any greasy residue. Use a mild shampoo to avoid stripping too much of the natural oils, which could lead to further dryness.

However, if you’ve got any scalp conditions like dermatitis or are sensitive to oils, you might want to start with a patch test. If your hair feels heavy or the oil doesn’t wash out entirely, it might indicate using too much or due to your individual dosha balance, olive oil may not be as suitable for you. For ongoing effectiveness, making this oiling a weekly practice could be beneficial.

Lastly, keep in mind that everyone’s hair is different and responds uniquely. If results aren’t as expected, integrating olive oil with other Ayurvedic practices like herbal rinses can sometimes better address your hair concerns. If issues persist despite these efforts, consulting a practitioner would help tailor the approach further.
