does oiling help hair growth - #39880
I am always worried about my hair lately. They've been falling out way too much, and I just don’t know what to do. I've tried a bunch of shampoos and all that stuff, but last week I was at a family gathering and everyone was talking about oiling. My uncle mentioned that oiling helps hair growth, and I was kinda skeptical. Like, does oiling help hair growth really?? I mean, I’ve heard of people saying they use coconut oil, olive oil, even castor oil, but I don’t know if any of it actually works. I used to have really thick hair, and now it feels so thin and brittle in some places. I’ve tried oiling my scalp with coconut oil a couple of times but wasn’t sure if I’m doing it right - do you apply it directly on the scalp or just on the lengths??? And should I leave it on overnight or wash it out after a few hours?? I’m concerned about the buildup too. Anyone have personal experiences or tips about oiling? Does it really help hair growth or is it just some old wives’ tale? I just want to get my hair back to what it used to be, any suggestions would be amazing!

Oiling indeed has been a traditional method in Ayurveda for promoting hair health, and it can can contribute to hair growth by nourishing the scalp and hair roots. In Ayurveda, oils are used to balance the body’s doshas— specifically kapha and vata dosha related imbalances are often linked to hair issues. Regular oiling works by providing essential nutrients and improving blood circulation to the scalp.
You mentioned coconut oil, which is quite beneficial for its cooling properties and ease of absorption. It penetrates the hair shaft and reduces protein loss. If your hair has become thin and brittle, castor oil, with its thicker consistency and potential to stimulate hair roots, may also be highly effective. Olive oil is great but generally more suitable for those with vata imbalances, bringing moisture to the hair.
In terms of application, for best results, gently massage a small amount of oil directly onto the scalp using your fingertips, ensuring the oil reaches the roots. Doing a massage stimulates the scalp which may directly aid hair growth. Also apply it to the length if you feel the hair itself needs nourishment. Leave the oil on for at least 2-3 hours, or overnight if you don’t find it uncomfortable. It is generally favorable to wash it off the next day with a mild ayurvedic shampoo to avoid buildup, but if applied in moderation, it shouldn’t leave much residue.
For optimal results, do this practice 1-2 times a week depending on your scalp’s oil production.
Consider using amla-infused oils which enhance pigmentation and prevent premature graying. Ensuring a balanced diet rich in protein, iron, and vitamins is also equally crucial for hair health – ayurveda emphasizes a holistic approach, after all.
Always monitor for any adverse reactions, as individual responses can vary, and consult a professional if your concerns persist.
