can we use honey on face daily - #40488

Zoey

I am really curious about something that's been on my mind lately about using honey on my face. I’ve been struggling with dry skin for a while now, especially during this change of seasons — it gets so irritating, and nothing seems to really help. Last weekend, I heard my friend talking about how she uses honey as a face mask, like, every day! She says it makes her skin glow, and I'm thinking, wow, can we use honey on face daily? That just sounds so simple and natural. But I wonder if it's really safe to use honey on my face every single day? I've tried other natural stuff before as well, but sometimes my skin reacts weirdly, like it gets red or too oily. It’s annoying and I don’t wanna go through that again. My skin is, like, super sensitive. Should I mix the honey with something else, or just apply it straight? Also, is there a specific type of honey that works better for skincare? Honestly, I feel a bit lost here and just want to find something that works without causing more problems. I noticed my friend’s skin looks really nice, but I’m nervous about trying it too often since I have had bad reactions before. Can we use honey on face daily or is that too much? Any advice on this would be super appreciated! Thanks!

Using honey on the face daily is generally safe, especially for dry and sensitive skin, due to its natural emollient and humectant properties. In Ayurveda, honey is known as ‘Madhu’ and is praised for its soothing, moisturizing, and healing benefits. However, when applying it every day, it’s crucial to ensure that your skin doesn’t react negatively. For individuals with sensitive skin, such as yourself, it’s suggested starting with a patch test—apply a small amount of honey on a less noticeable area, like the forearm or behind the ear, and observe for any adverse reactions over a day.

Ideally, using raw or organic honey is recommended because it contains more active enzymes and fewer additives than processed ones. Manuka honey, in particular, is renowned for its higher therapeutic qualities, including antibacterial effects that could help with acne or breakouts. If you’re using it daily, try mixing honey with ingredients suited to your dosha and skin needs, such as aloe vera for calming properties or turmeric for its anti-inflammatory qualities. Apply a thin layer on your face, leave it on for 10–15 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water.

Given that your skin is sensitive, only use honey independently initially to understand your skin’s response. Gradually, you can incorporate other ingredients, but always with caution. Overuse might lead to over-saturation or potential irritation — if you experience redness or breakouts, scale back to two to three times a week. Consistency in mild usage can nourish and maintain skin health without overburdening the skin barrier. Also, maintain a balanced diet rich in hydrating foods like cucumber and hydrate adequately, as hydration from the inside directly influences skin health.

Lastly, consider underlying factors such as stress, hormonal imbalances, or diet that may contribute to skin sensitivity or dryness. If these persist, consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalized, holistic approach can be beneficial. Also don’t forget to consult with a dermatologist before makeing any significant changes to your skincare regime, especially if previous adverse reactions have occurred.

Yes, you can use honey on your face daily, especially if you have sensitive skin, but there are a few things to consider to ensure it suits your unique needs. Honey is known for it’s soothing and hydrating properties, making it effective for dry and irritated skin. Its natural composition helps in retaining moisture and is less likely to cause adverse reactions due to its gentleness.

However, when incorporating honey into your skincare routine, start by testing it first. Apply a small amount on a patch of skin on your neck or arm and observe for any adverse reactions for 24 hours — just to make sure your skin tolerates it well.

For daily use, I’d recommend raw, organic honey or Manuka honey, as these types retain more potent healing properties. You might want to blend honey with a little bit of aloe vera gel or rose water for added moisture without feeling too sticky. Apply the mixture to your entire face, leave it on for about 10-15 minutes, and then rinse it off gently with lukewarm water.

Because of honey’s mild heating property (ushna), which can heighten pitta, those with naturally high pitta might need to be cautious. Your idea of how often to use it should be guided by your skin’s response. It’s wise to start using it every other day before deciding if daily use is agreeable to your skin.

Also, continuing to moisturize after you wash off the honey can help lock in the hydration. Avoid applying it on broken skin or areas with active acne, as it may aggravate those conditions. If you notice excessive redness or an oily feel, consider switching to applying only two to three times a week. Keep an eye on your skin’s response, and adjust the frequency as needed.
