is curd good for kidney stones - #40690

Bella

I am really confused about my recent health issue. Last month, I started having this unbearable pain in my side, and after some tests, turns out I have kidney stones. They said it's not huge, but man, the pain is a lot. Through all this, I've been tryin to change my diet and stuff. My friend keeps telling me about how curd is like, super good for pretty much everything, and especially says it’s good for kidney stones. That’s why I’m wondering, is curd good for kidney stones really? I’ve read mixed opinions, like, some say the calcium in curd could be a problem, while others say it helps. I don’t wanna mess anything up, especially since I'm already dealing with this. I tried curd for the first time after the diagnosis and it was okay, but I'm kinda nervous about adding it more regularly into my meals. What’s the deal with curd and kidney stones? Should I be scared or is it really fine to have it? Also, does it help with some kind of balance in the body or something like that? Any thoughts or suggestions would be so helpful! Thanks!

Curd in Ayurveda is generally considered beneficial due to its probiotic qualities, nourishing effects, and ability to pacify Vata dosha. For kidney stones, though, the role of curd is a bit complex and not black-and-white. Kidney stones are often linked with imbalances in Pitta and Kapha doshas and can be aggravated by excessive consumption of substances that increase these doshas.

However, curd, being an acidic dairy product, has the potential to increase Kapha and Pitta dosha, which could either help or aggravate the condition depending on factors like your overall constitution, the type of stones, and your existing diet. For instance, calcium oxalate stones are common, and the high calcium content in curd could potentially contribute to their formation if consumed excessively.

One important thing to note is the way curd is consumed. In Ayurveda, it’s suggested to have curd in moderation, preferably not at night, and it should ideally be consumed in a diluted form such as buttermilk, which is easier to digest and balances digestion. You can season it with cumin or ginger to improve its digestibility and avoid aggravation of the doshas.

As far as balance in the body goes, curd can improve gut health and digestion when consumed correctly, which indirectly helps in managing stone formation. It’s always wise to watch the portion size and monitor how it affects your symptoms. Including plenty of water and foods rich in citrate like lemon can help in managing kidney stones better than relying solely on curd.

If you’re worried, it could be practical to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner who can assess your unique constitution and advise more personalized dietary adjustments. Meanwhile, make sure to drink ample water, stay active, and limit foods high in oxalates like spinach and nuts, which are more directly linked to kidney stone formation. Moderation and balance are key—stay mindful of body signals and consult with a healthcare professional for tailored advice!

When it comes to curd and kidney stones, the advice can indeed be a bit confusing due to conflicting information. In the context of Siddha-Ayurvedic principles and based on the understanding of vata-pitta-kapha balance and agni (digestive fire), curd can have both positive and negative effects depending on your unique situation.

Curd, or fermented yogurt, is generally considered to be cooling and can help balance pitta dosha, which might be beneficial if your body exhibits a pitta imbalance. It is also a good source of probiotics, benefiting gut health and digestion if consumed in moderation and when prepared properly. However, for those who have kidney stones, particularly calcium-oxalate stones, consuming high-calcium foods like curd could potentially contribute to stone formation if there is an underlying metabolic imbalance.

Here are some practical considerations:

1. Have curd in small quantities, and avoid it during the night as it can increase kapha and may burden the digestive system.

2. Prefer homemade curd instead of store-bought varieties that might contain additional thickeners or preservatives.

3. You can add a pinch of trikatu (a mix of black pepper, ginger, and long pepper) to balance its cooling nature and enhance digestion.

4. Balance your diet with plenty of hydrating fluids, and foods high in citrate, such as lemon water, which can help manage stone formation.

5. Avoid adding sugar or salt to curd, as these can alter the beneficial properties.

In conclusion, while curd can be included, it should be part of a balanced diet taking into account your dosha, the underlying cause of your kidney stones, and overall dietary habits. You should also consult with a healthcare provider to ensure that it aligns with your personal health needs, especially if your condition might have specific dietary implications. Always prioritize fluids and consult a professional if your condition involves severe pain or changes rapidly.
