After 13 years of lower-body disability following a lumbar puncture, full recovery is challenging but significant improvement is possible with consistent, targeted rehabilitation. Your progress—standing and taking a few steps with the walker—shows that the nervous system and muscles still retain some plasticity. Walking smoothly will require strengthening, coordination, and gradual neuromuscular retraining. A structured plan includes: daily physiotherapy focused on muscle strengthening, especially the right leg and core muscles, balance training, and gait re-education. Use supportive devices like a walker or parallel bars initially, then gradually reduce reliance as strength improves. Incorporate passive and active stretching to prevent contractures, and consider functional electrical stimulation (FES) if available, to activate weak muscles. Ayurvedic support can help nourish nerves and muscles. Take Ashwagandha ½ tsp with warm milk twice daily and Bala (Sida cordifolia) Churna ½ tsp twice daily to strengthen muscles and support nerve function. External therapies like Abhyanga with Mahanarayan Oil and gentle warm oil massage of legs and lower back daily improve circulation, reduce stiffness, and support recovery. Patience and consistency are key. With dedicated physiotherapy, strengthening, and supportive therapies, walking independently with smoother gait is achievable over months to a year, though full symmetry may take longer. Regular monitoring and gradual progression prevent injury and optimize recovery.
