how to decrease uric acid level - #41732

Savannah

I am really struggling with this high uric acid thing. A few months ago, I started experiencing these sudden joint pains, especially in my big toe. Like, it was super swollen and painful. I didn’t think much of it at first, but then the doctor ran blood tests and boom—my uric acid level is way above normal! I was shocked and honestly, pretty scared. They mentioned that I need to learn *how to decrease uric acid level* to avoid more serious issues, which sounds kinda scary. I’ve been trying to cut down on red meat and shellfish, but it’s hard! I miss my favorite dishes. And water, omg, I’m drinking so much water it feels like a chore. I also read somewhere that cherries can help, but I'm not sure how many I should eat or if it really works. Is there anything else I can do thats really effective? Any herbal remedies or Ayurvedic practices that can aid in *how to decrease uric acid level*? Also, I noticed stress seems to trigger my flare-ups too, how can I manage that with some natural options? I just wanna get back to my normal life and not worry about this uric acid spike. Thanks for any suggestions!

Doctors' responses

To address high uric acid levels, Ayurveda offers several effective approaches focusing on diet, lifestyle, and herbal remedies. To start, limit intake of purine-rich foods like red meat, shellfish, and some fish (sardines, mackerel), as these can elevate uric acid. Instead, emphasize a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. Foods like cherries have been shown to reduce uric acid levels due to their antioxidant properties and you may consume a handful daily to experience potential benefits. However, moderation is key.

Hydration is crucial for flushing out excess uric acid. If regular water intake seems tedious, consider infusing your water with lemon for added vitamin C or choosing herbal teas like nettle or dandelion, which possess diuretic properties. Aloe vera juice, taken a small cup after meals, is another option known to aid in the detoxification process. Maintain at least a total daily fluid intake of about 8-10 glasses, adjusting based on activity level and climate.

Incorporate Ayurvedic herbs like Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) and Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), which are known to support kidney function and aid in reducing uric acid. A typical dosage for these herbs in powder form might be half a teaspoon twice daily, but it’s always advisable to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner before starting any herbal supplements.

Minimizing stress is equally important, as stress can exacerbate symptoms. Practice relaxation techniques such as Abhyanga (self-oil massage) using warm sesame oil for its calming effect on Vata dosha, which supports joint health. Lifestyle practices like yoga and pranayama (breathing exercises) are excellent choices for reducing stress and enhancing metabolic function. Aim for around 20-30 minutes daily, focusing on postures and breathwork that improve circulation and energize the mind, such as Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) and Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing).

Ensure regular physical activity but keep it gentle on the joints, such as walking or swimming. Avoid high-intensity workouts that can strain joints and increases uric acid levels.

While these Ayurvedic interventions can significantly support uric acid regulation and joint health, do continue to follow up with your healthcare provider to monitor levels and ensure comprehensive care.
