Should I get the RSV vaccine as a 77-year-old with COPD? - #42421

Client_a2ae80

I am a 77 yr old female with COPD who never smoked, should I get an RSV vaccine? I had breast cancer 5 yrs ago w/chemo and radiation! I try to eat organically most of the time. I did get the flu last year, is it safe for me to get the vaccine?

For a 77-year-old with COPD and a history of breast cancer, especially considering recent chemotherapy and radiation, getting the RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) vaccine could be beneficial. RSV can lead to serious respiratory infections, and your existing COPD already makes respiratory infections a significant concern. In the context of Ayurveda, maintaining strong immunity (ojas) is vital, but in situations like yours, conventional vaccination can provide crucial protection.

Since you had flu last year, this increases the necessity for additional preventive measures like vaccines. The RSV vaccine is generally safe, but it’s important to consult your healthcare provider to confirm this based on your medical history. Your history of breast cancer and treatments may influence how your body responds to vaccines, but generally, vaccinations are carefully designed to be safe and effective.

While waiting for your appointment, focus on maintaining a balanced agni and manageable diet to augment your immunity naturally. Consuming warm homemade soups with ginger and turmeric can help support your lung function. Try to ensure rest and avoid stressful situations when possible.

Keep your meals light and warm, as this will support your digestive fire and overall energy levels. Drinking herbal teas made from tulsi and licorice root, beneficial for your respiratory health, can offer additional support. Engaging in gentle breathing exercises will aid in supporting lung capacity, but always do these comfortably without strain.

These lifestyle practices in Ayurveda are complementary, ensuring that your body remains resilient. However, they shouldn’t replace conventional medical advice. Given the vulnerabilities linked to age and current health conditions, vaccines often play a critical role in disease prevention. Always make decisions in conjunction with professional advice concerning your specific health circumstances.
