Doctors' responses

If you have already given half a Kayam tablet to your 12-year-old son, it’s important to monitor him closely for any signs of adverse reactions or severe discomfort. Kayam tablet is a commonly used Ayurvedic laxative that primarily contains herbs like Senna, which can be potent. This type of remedy isn’t typically recommended for children without proper medical advice due to their different metabolic rates and sensitivities.

For now, watch for symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. Mild side effects like these may be manageable at home, but if they become severe or if you notice anything unusual, please contact a healthcare professional immediately. Since it’s just been an hour, depending on his current condition, you might consider consulting with a pediatrician or visiting the nearest urgent care to ensure his safety, especially given he’s been constipated for several days.

In this situation, keeping him well-hydrated is crucial. Encourage him to drink plenty of water, as hydration can be beneficial for easing constipation. Offering warm water mixed with a small amount of ghee or clarified butter could also help stimulate digestion gently. Additionally, ensure his meals are rich in fiber-containing fruits like pear or papaya, and vegetables like cauliflower or beetroot in a well-cooked form.

In future situations, favor non-medicinal remedies initially for mild constipation in children. Ayurveda recommends maintaining a balanced diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, and daily physical activities to promote healthy digestion. Triphala churna can be considered a safer option under supervision, in small doses, specifically formulated for children. It’s advisable to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner or pediatrician before giving any medication or herbal supplement to a child for constipation or any other ailment.
