how to remove stains from clothes caused by other clothes at home - #43245

Michael

I am really struggling with this and don't know how to remove stains from clothes caused by other clothes at home! Like, I just did laundry and somehow, my new shirt got all these weird colors from my old towels. It’s super frustrating because I always wash darks and lights separately, but I guess I must've mixed something up? 🤦‍♀️ These stains are like paint splotches and I’ve tried washing it again, like twice, but it’s not working!! I even read some stuff about treating stains immediately with vinegar or baking soda, but I can’t remember what works best or if it’s something else? Should I let the shirt dry first or just throw it in some kind of special stain remover?? I don't want to ruin the shirt because I really like it, but I really need to figure out how to remove stains from clothes caused by other clothes at home. Anyone have any proven tips? Or maybe some home remedies that actually help?? Ugh, laundry day is turning into a nightmare! Please help!

When clothes end up stained by other garments in the wash, it can really test your patience. Fortunately, there are some home remedies you can try to save your favorite shirt. Begin by assessing the stain type if its fresh or already dried. If it’s still fairly wet, acting quickly can make a big difference.

First, you might want to try a simple vinegar solution. Mix one part white vinegar with two parts cool water. Before applying, wet the stained area with water, then gently dab the vinegar solution onto the stained spot. Don’t rub it vigorously as this might spread the color further into the fabric. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, then rinse the shirt under cool water.

If the stain doesn’t budge, baking soda could be an alternative. Create a paste using 4 tablespoons of baking soda mixed with a little water until it forms a thick paste. Apply this directly onto the stain and let it dry completely. This technique could take a few hours. As baking soda dries, it helps lift the color from the fabric. Once dried, rinse off the paste with cool water.

Stain removers specifically for color transfer also do exist, which can be a helpful second step if home remedies don’t fully remove it. If you have one handy, follow the directions on the bottle, and don’t forget to test it on a hidden part of the garment first to ensure it won’t harm the fabric.

Always air dry your shirt afterward, so you can assess if the stain is completely gone. The heat from tumble dryers can set stains permanently if they’re not fully lifted. These methods are worth trying before you consider more intensive options like commercial stain removers, but remember approach every method with careful, gentle handling to make sure your shirt stays intact. If all else fails, consulting a professional cleaner could be its last resort.

For handling stains from color transfer during laundry, you may find some household remedies useful. While it’s not strictly an Ayurvedic issue, principles of natural ingredients often apply. Start by treating the stain while the fabric is still damp, which can help in lifting the dye that has bled onto your clothes more effectively.

First, try using a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. Vinegar’s acetic acid content helps break down the dye stains. Dab the stained area with a clean cloth dipped in the solution, and gently blot to prevent spreading the discoloration. Avoid rubbing, as this might worsen the stain. Allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes then rinse with cold water.

Baking soda paste is another option. Create it by mixing baking soda with a bit of water until you achieve a thick consistency. This can help absorb and lift dyes thanks to its mild alkaline nature. Apply the paste on the stain and let it sit for about 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with cold water.

If these natural remedies don’t completely remove the stain, a color remover or non-chlorine bleach might be necessary, but proceed with caution and follow garment care instructions. Be sure to test any solution in a less visible area first to ensure it won’t alter the fabric color.

To help prevent future color transfer, you can add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle as a natural color-fixing agent. This method not only helps set the color but can also brighten your clothes without harmful chemicals.
