Doctors' responses
Loose stools after beginning a new regimen with Brahmi could be an indicator of an imbalance in your digestive system, possibly due to its cooling properties, which may aggravate certain dosha imbalances. Brahmi is primarily sattvic and is considered to have a cooling effect, primarily benefiting the mind by enhancing memory and calming the nervous system. However, this cooling nature can tend to aggravate Vata and sometimes Kapha if not balanced properly, especially in those with a weak agni (digestive fire).
Try these adjustments: First, take Brahmi with food to mitigate its cooling effect on your system. If you are taking it in the form of a capsule, swallow it with warm water, rather than cold, to aid proper digestion and assimilation. Additionally, it would be beneficial if you include warming spices in your diet, like ginger, black pepper or cumin, while consuming Brahmi. These spices enhance the digestive fire, so you might want to consider adding a pinch to your meals.
Monitor whether your stool consistency improves after making these adjustments. If symptoms persist more than a week even after trying these modifications, it might be best to discontinue it and replace it with a milder enhancer like Shankhpushpi, which is also beneficial for mental health but might not aggravate digestion as much.
Consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner or your healthcare provider would give a comprehensive analysis suitable for your body constitution and current state of health. Make sure your dosage is appropriate for your indivudal needs, sometimes a lower dose than 500 mg may be necessary especially when starting. If symptoms persist or worsen, discontinue any new supplement and seek medical advice immediately, as it may indication of other underlying digestive issues. Be aware of any other supplements or medications you are taking that might have similar side effects or interactions.
