what is loban dhoop - #44217

Anna

I am feeling really confused about something I stumbled upon lately. A friend mentioned something about "what is loban dhoop" and that it might be good for some issues I’ve been having, like anxiety and sleep troubles. I never heard of it before, but apparently, it’s this incense or something? Last week, I had this really rough night. Couldn’t sleep at all! I just kept tossing and turning, dreading the morning. My friend suggested lighting some loban dhoop before bed could help me relax. It's supposed to be calming, but I wasn’t sure if it limits to that. Tho, I do want something natural that can add to my bedtime routine. I read something online about loban dhoop being used in Ayurvedic practices and thought I might give it a shot. But like, what exactly is loban dhoop? Can anyone tell me about its benefits? Is it safe to use every night? Also, is there a specific way I should light it or something? Feels overwhelming, with all the opinions around. I just want somethin' to help me chill out! Would really appreciate the advice from anyone who's tried it or knows more about it. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Loban dhoop, often referred to as frankincense, is indeed a form of incense commonly used in traditional Ayurvedic and spiritual practices. It’s derived from the resin of the Boswellia tree, which is known for its aromatic properties. When burned, loban releases a pleasant scent that is believed to have various therapeutic benefits. These include calming the mind, reducing anxiety, and promoting a sense of relaxation, which could be what your friend was referring to as an aid for anxiety and sleep troubles.

In Ayurveda, loban is seen as an enhancer of the sattva guna, which aligns with qualities of equilibrium and serenity. It’s also believed to purify the air and environment, making it conducive for meditation or restful sleep. As for safety, loban dhoop is generally safe for regular use in moderation. However, like any incense, it should be used in a well-ventilated area to avoid smoke buildup, which might irritate sensitive individuals, affecting their lungs or causing headaches.

To incorporate loban dhoop into your bedtime routine, here’s a simple approach you can follow: Light a small piece of dhoop on a heatproof dish or incense holder at least 30 minutes before you plan to sleep. Allow it to burn for a bit and diffuse its scent around your room. Take this time to practice some mindful breathing or a short meditation, focusing on the aroma and letting it ground you into a state of relaxation. Make sure to extinguish the incense before sleeping to ensure safety.

However, it’s crucial to mention that while loban dhoop might help in relaxing, it’s essential to address other factors affecting your sleep, such as screen time, diet, and overall lifestyle. Sometimes, combining aromatherapy like this with other Ayurveda practices, such as a warm oil massage on the temples or a cup of calming herbal tea, enhances the effectiveness. Always listen to your body’s responses, and if any discomfort arises, discontinue use. Consult with a health professional if sleep problems persist, as they might indicate a more complex issue.
