how to prevent uric acid - #44349

Claire

I am struggling a bit with my uric acid levels... last week, I had this horrible flare-up, and honestly, it scared me. Was working out a lot more ‘cause I decided to get fit, but then I suddenly felt this insane pain in my big toe! Like, who knew something could hurt so much?! I do love my red meat and shellfish way too much, and I've been kinda ignoring the advice on my diet for ages. I even ended up in the hospital for tests, and the doctor said my uric acid levels were higher than normal, which made me freak out a bit. Now I really wanna know how to prevent uric acid spikes. I've read stuff about drinking more water and eating cherries (they’re supposed to help, right?), but is there anything else I should do? I mean, I get that cutting back on purine-rich foods is key, but can I still enjoy a steak once in a while? Also, are there specific herbal remedies or Ayurvedic practices that can help with this? My diet right now is a total mess, and with the holidays coming up, I can’t help but wonder how to prevent uric acid issues while still enjoying the festivities! Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

High uric acid levels can definitely surprise you with unexpected pain flare-ups. Since your recent gout episode, focusing on prevention is wise. In Ayurveda, balancing your doshas, particularly kapha and pitta, plays a central role in managing uric acid levels. Begin by moderating your intake of purine-rich foods like red meat and shellfish — enjoy them occasionally, but with caution.

Hydration is vital. Drinking ample water—aim for 2-3 liters daily—helps flush out excess uric acid. Adding lemon juice can further alkalize your system. Cherries have merit; studies show their anthocyanins can reduce uric acid and inflammation, so keep them in your diet.

Shilajit, an Ayurvedic tonic, can help balance things naturally by supporting kidney functions, which may help reduce uric acid. Consider capsules or resin forms, as per suitability. Additionally, Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) is known for lowering uric acid levels. Take approximately 500 mg twice daily, though consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to confirm doses fit your constitution.

Incorporating a regular schedule of gentle yoga or walking can aid metabolism without over-stressing the body. Be mindful of overheated exercises, as muscle breakdown can transiently increase uric acid.

Ebiotic digestion is key. Avoid heavy, oily, and sugary foods that impair your Agni (digestive fire). Favor lighter meals, steamed vegetables, whole grains like quinoa, and spices like ginger and turmeric to promote digestion and reduce inflammation. Fenugreek seeds, soaked overnight and consumed on an empty stomach, may also assist with uric acid management.

During holidays, balance is crucial. Opt for plant-based proteins—legumes and yoghurt can replace meats for protein intake. And do allow yourself a modest treat occasionally, ensuring it’s balanced with rest of your diet. Reducing stress and ensuring proper sleep aids in your body’s recovery and metabolic equilibrium.

Prior to any herbal regimen, do consult with healthcare professionals, especially if you’re taking other medications.
