The gum hurts and bleeds - #183

Ravi

The gum hurts and bleeds, the left side hurt, I went to the doctor - they decided that it was the upper tooth. They were treated in three doses. The inflammation was removed, the nerve was removed, and a seal was placed. Before the third visit, the whole side was aching again. The doctor said that when the nerve is removed, the diseased tooth can hurt for up to two weeks. Although, there has already been a gap of about 10 days. The seals were placed and released. I ate something relatively hard, my gums hurt. It only hurts more every day. It aches at night, it bleeds. I'm trying to chew with the other side, the patient can't even close her teeth - it hurts. It also hurts to touch the gum. At the first appointment, the doctor mentioned that I had pockets and a stone there. But for some reason there are no actions to delete. What to do?

It sounds like you’re experiencing significant discomfort after your dental treatment. Schedule an immediate follow-up appointment with your dentist to address the worsening pain and bleeding, and ask for an evaluation to rule out infection, which may require an X-ray. Since there are pockets and tartar, request a professional cleaning (scaling) to remove plaque and reduce inflammation. For pain management, consider using over-the-counter relief like ibuprofen and saltwater rinses to soothe your gums. You can also use clove oil to reduce pain & inflammation. Dry gargling with strained triphalan decoction which will immediately reduce any infection. Stick to soft foods to prevent aggravating the pain, and maintain good oral hygiene by gently brushing and using antiseptic mouthwash. If symptoms persist, consider consulting another dentist or oral surgeon. If pain worsens or you notice swelling or fever, seek urgent dental care.

I’m sorry to hear about your dental issues; it sounds quite uncomfortable and concerning. After having a tooth treated with nerve removal and a filling, some discomfort can be normal for a short period, especially if the tooth was previously infected. However, since you’re experiencing increased pain, bleeding, and sensitivity after 10 days, this may indicate an underlying issue that requires further evaluation. It’s crucial to return to your dentist for a thorough examination, as they may need to check for any remaining infection, evaluate the filling, and assess the condition of your gums and the bone surrounding the tooth. The mention of gum pockets and tartar could contribute to inflammation and pain, so a professional cleaning may be necessary.

In addition to dental care, you might consider some Ayurvedic remedies to help alleviate discomfort and promote healing. Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce inflammation and kill bacteria in the mouth. You can also use Turmeric Powder, known for its anti-inflammatory properties; create a paste with water and apply it to the affected area for about 10 minutes before rinsing. Another option is Clove Oil, which is well-known for its analgesic properties; apply a small amount directly to the painful area to provide temporary relief. Additionally, Triphala can be beneficial; you can make a mouthwash by mixing Triphala powder in warm water to promote gum health and reduce inflammation. Neem has antibacterial properties, so you might consider chewing on neem leaves or using a neem-based toothpaste. Ashwagandha may also help in reducing stress and promoting overall oral health. Until you receive further treatment, continue to avoid hard or crunchy foods that could exacerbate your pain. It’s essential to communicate your ongoing symptoms with your dentist, as they may need to perform a deeper cleaning or consider other treatments to address the gum issues and ensure proper healing. Regular follow-up appointments are key to managing dental health effectively.

It sounds like you’re really dealing with a lot right now, and that must be super frustrating especially when you’re already seeing a dentist. So, from an Ayurvedic perspective, it’s crucial to understand that oral health is closely tied to the balance of your doshas, specifically the Kapha dosha, since it governs the strength of the gums and teeth. When there’s imbalance, it leads to symptoms like bleeding gums or pain.

Right now, since you’re experiencing continued pain and bleeding, it’s important not to delay further care. I recommend you return to your dentist or even get a second opinion from another dental professional. The pockets and tartar (stone) can indeed cause bleeding and pain and they might require scaling and cleaning. It’s crucial that any mechanical dental issues are addressed first.

Now, to support this with Ayurveda, you can start by rinsing your mouth with a decoction of Triphala, which helps in reducing inflammation. Boil a teaspoon of Triphala powder in a cup of water, let it cool, and use it as a mouth rinse twice daily. It targets Kapha imbalance and might offer some relief.

Another thing, massage your gums gently with sesame oil mixed with a pinch of turmeric. Really just a pinch because too much turmeric can stain teeth. Do this once or twice a day—it strengthens the gums, reduces inflammation and supports healing.

Be mindful of your diet. Avoid cold, sour, hard foods that can aggravate the Pitta and Kapha doshas. Stick to a softer diet for now, warm food is soothing, like soups and rice-dal preparations. Continue chewing with the other side until the pain subsides.

Lastly, ensure your oral hygiene routine is on point—brush gently twice a day and floss daily, even if it feels uncomfortable. But again, seeing a dentist ASAP to rule out infection or further complications is non-negotiable, especially given the ongoing symptoms.
