* Cavities are permanent holes that are formed on the hard surface of your teeth. Initially, cavities start small and gradually they get bigger. Tooth cavities are caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria in your mouth, frequent snacking, having too many sugary drinks and not cleaning your teeth well. Though people of all ages get cavities.

* When you eat food particles stay on your teeth. Naturally-occurring bacteria in your mouth thrive on them and produce acids. These acids then combine with bacteria, food particles and saliva to form plaque, a sticky film that covers the teeth. The plaque damages the teeth, creating tiny holes called cavities.

* According to Ayurveda, ahara-vihar (diet and lifestyle) are important to leading a physically healthy lifestyle and dental health is no exception. The prevention and management of tooth cavities involve a combination of ayurvedic medicine diet changes and lifestyle changes.

Teeth cavities and black spots on teeth are common issues, and Ayurveda offers several natural remedies to help manage these problems. However, it’s crucial to understand that deeply cavitated teeth often require professional dental treatment, such as fillings. Ayurveda can support but not replace emergency dental care.

For cavities, consider using a paste made of neem and clove oil. Neem has anti-bacterial properties, and clove oil can help numb pain and reduce infection. Make a paste using neem powder and a drop of clove oil, apply it directly to the cavity for 5-10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. This routine should be done twice a day for up to two weeks, but don’t skip consulting a dentist.

Black spots on teeth are often due to tooth decay or staining. Brushing regularly with a paste of turmeric powder and coconut oil can help reduce staining and support healthier gums. Mix a bit of turmeric with coconut oil and brush gently, avoid eating or drinking anything for 30 minutes after application.

For dental plaque, try oil pulling with sesame or coconut oil. Swish around one tablespoon of oil in your mouth for 10-15 minutes daily before breakfast. Follow it up with brushing using a herbal toothpaste containing ingredients like babul, neem, or licorice, which help in maintaining oral health.

Ensure your diet is sattvic, avoid excessive sugary and acidic foods which worsen tooth decay. Include fibrous vegetables like carrots and guava, alongside dairy products that provide calcium to strengthen teeth. Also, rinse mouth with water after every meal to clear food particles, this prevents plaque buildup.

These remedies require consistency and patience. Dental issues can signify deeper imbalances in the body such as kapha vitiation, so consider a full Ayurvedic consultation for personalized guidance. But remember, severe cavities and blackened teeth ultimately demand a professional dental intervention to prevent further decay and damage.
