Ayurvedic Lifestyle: Creating Balance and Harmony

द्वारा लिखित
Dr. Surya Bhagwati
Gujarat Ayurveda University
I am a Senior Ayurveda Physician with more than 28 years in this field — and trust me, it still surprises me how much there is to learn every single day. Over these years, I’ve had the chance to treat over 1 lakh patients (probably more by now honestly), both through in-person consults and online. Some come in with a mild cough, others with conditions no one’s been able to figure out for years. Each case brings its own rhythm, and that’s where real Ayurveda begins. I still rely deeply on classical tools — *Nadi Pariksha*, *Roga-Rogi Pariksha*, proper *prakriti-vikriti* mapping — not just ticking symptoms into a list. I don’t believe in ready-made cures or generic charts. Diagnosis needs attention. I look at how the disease behaves *inside* that specific person, which doshas are triggering what, and where the imbalance actually started (hint: it’s usually not where the pain is). Over the years I’ve worked with pretty much all age groups and all kinds of health challenges — from digestive upsets & fevers to chronic, autoimmune, hormonal, metabolic and degenerative disorders. Arthritis, diabetes, PCOD, asthma, thyroid... but also things like unexplained fatigue or joint swelling that comes and goes randomly. Many of my patients had already “tried everything else” before they walked into Ayurveda, and watching their systems respond slowly—but surely—is something I don’t take lightly. My line of treatment usually combines herbal formulations (classical ones, not trendy ones), Panchakarma detox when needed, and realistic dietary and lifestyle corrections. Long-term healing needs long-term clarity — not just short bursts of symptom relief. And honestly, I tell patients that too. I also believe patient education isn’t optional. I explain things. Why we’re doing virechana, why the oil changed mid-protocol, why we pause or shift the meds after a few weeks. I want people to feel involved, not confused. Ayurveda works best when the patient is part of the process, not just receiving instructions. Even now I keep learning — through texts, talks, patient follow-ups, sometimes even mistakes that taught me what not to do. And I’m still committed, still fully into it. Because for me, this isn’t just a job. It’s a lifelong responsibility — to restore balance, protect *ojas*, and help each person live in tune with themselves. That’s the real goal.

In today’s fast-paced world, finding balance and harmony seems like an elusive dream. However, ancient wisdom often holds the keys to a more balanced and harmonious life. Enter Ayurveda, a holistic system of medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years in India. Ayurveda, which translates to “the science of life,” offers profound insights and practices to help us achieve balance in mind, body, and spirit.

Understanding Ayurveda: The Science of Life

At the heart of Ayurveda lies the concept of achieving balance among the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These doshas represent different combinations of the five elements – ether, air, fire, water, and earth – and govern various physiological and psychological functions in the body.

Vata: Associated with the elements of ether and air, Vata governs movement and communication.

– Pitta: Linked to fire and water, Pitta regulates digestion, metabolism, and transformation.

– Kapha: Comprising earth and water, Kapha governs structure, stability, and lubrication.

According to Ayurveda, when these doshas are in balance, we experience optimal health, vitality, and well-being. However, imbalances can lead to discomfort, illness, and disease.

The Ayurvedic Lifestyle: Key Principles

  1. Mindful Eating:

Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of eating in a calm, peaceful environment and choosing foods that align with your dosha constitution. Each dosha benefits from specific tastes and textures, and incorporating a variety of fresh, seasonal foods can help maintain balance.

  1. Daily Routine (Dinacharya):

Establishing a daily routine that aligns with the natural rhythms of the day is essential in Ayurveda. From waking up early to practicing self-care rituals like oil massage (abhyanga) and tongue scraping, dinacharya sets the tone for a balanced day.

  1. Yoga and Meditation:

Both yoga and meditation are integral components of the Ayurvedic lifestyle. Yoga postures (asanas) help balance the doshas, while meditation calms the mind and promotes inner harmony.

  1. Herbal Remedies:

Ayurveda harnesses the healing power of herbs to address imbalances and promote overall well-being. From ashwagandha for stress relief to turmeric for inflammation, the herbal pharmacopoeia of Ayurveda offers a natural approach to health.

Tongue scraping helps remove ama, or toxins, which can accumulate on the tongue overnight. It can improve taste, boost digestion (agni), and freshen breath too! Plus, it can be a part of a morning routine that balances doshas. So it's small step with big impact! If you notice any imbalances, like thick coating, might be time to consult an Ayurvedic expert. Take care!

Sure! For Vata imbalances, herbs like ashwagandha, ginger, or licorice are often recommended. For Pitta, you might try cooling herbs like amla, coriander, or neem. Kapha imbalances can benefit from warming herbs like cinnamon, turmeric, or black pepper. But remember, it's best to check with a qualified practitioner to match them with your specific needs!

You can definitely try ashwagandha, it's known for calming vata dosha and reducing stress. Brahmi is another one that helps balance the mind and improve concentration. And don't forget tulsi; it's great as a tea and supports your body's adaptation to stress. Just make sure these suit your dosha type! 😊

To figure out your dosha, you can start by observing your natural tendencies and habits. Notice how your body and mind react to different situations. Alternatively, for more accurate results, you might consider a consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner on a platform like Alveda. They'll guide you on this journey based on your unique constitution.

Sure! Some easy-to-find Ayurvedic herbs you can try are turmeric, ginger, and ashwagandha. They’re great for supporting digestion, boosting immunity, and reducing stress. Just add 'em to your meals or tea, but go easy if you’re Pitta-dominant, as spices heat things up. If you're not sure about your dosha, maybe consult a practitioner.
What are some practical ways to identify my dosha and adjust my diet accordingly?

Figuring out your dosha can be like piecing together a puzzle! Observe your body type, personality, and tendencies. For instance, Vata folk might be slim and energetic, while Kapha types are more solid and calm. Once you have a sense, you can adjust your diet with the right tastes: sweet for Pitta, spicy for Kapha, and oily for Vata. Chatting with an Ayurvedic practitioner can totally help too!

Starting with simple steps makes it easier. Begin by identifying your dominant dosha and see if there are any imbalances. Try waking up early, eating warm fresh foods, and spending a few moments breathing deeply. Listen to your body's cues! Balance comes with small, consistent changes. If you're unsure of your dosha, there are quizzes online that can help.

Identifying your dosha can be a bit tricky cuz it's unique to each person, but you can start by looking at your physical and emotional traits. Vata types are usually thin and energetic, Pitta are more muscular and intense, and Kapha are sturdy and calm. Online quizzes can help, or you might wanna consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for a deeper understanding.

Great question! To start with Ayurveda in a busy life, try waking up earlier for a quick meditation or breathing practice—it helps balance Vata. Also, small things like drinking warm water can spark your agni (digestive fire). Eat meals in a calm setting, aiming for dosha-friendly foods. And it’s okay to start small—every bit helps!
