Ginger tea is commonly recommended for digestive issues, but in the case of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), it might not always be the best option. Since ginger is a warming agent, it can sometimes overstimulate the stomach and lead to increased hunger or discomfort, especially in individuals with a predominant Pitta constitution or aggravated Pitta dosha.

For those dealing with GERD, cooling and soothing teas can be more beneficial. Fennel tea is worth considering. Fennel seeds, known in Ayurveda as ‘Saunf’, are cooling and help in reducing Pitta, thus calming the digestive system. To make fennel tea, steep 1-2 teaspoons of fennel seeds in hot water for about 5-10 minutes, strain, and then sip slowly. You can enjoy this tea about 30 minutes after meals to assist digestion.

Another option is licorice root tea. Licorice is greatly revered in Ayurveda for its soothing properties on the mucous membrane of the stomach and esophagus. It’s Pitta-pacifying, reducing acidity and alleviating symptoms of GERD. To prepare, steep 1 teaspoon of dried licorice root in hot water for 10 minutes, strain, and drink post meal.

If you tend to feel hungry after drinking ginger tea, your digestion might be too strong or slightly unbalanced. Switch to one of the above options and observe any changes. Also, ensure you’re eating regular, balanced meals throughout the day to support steady digestion without over-stimulation. Avoiding spicy, oily, and very sour foods can also assist in managing GERD symptoms.

Additionally, taking a short walk after meals, ensuring at least a 3-hour gap between dinner and bedtime, and elevating the head while sleeping can further aid in managing GERD. Always ensure your practices align with your body’s response, and consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet, especially if symptoms persist.
