Client_c082c2

My husband has had diarrhea for 3 weeks now. He had been eating white bread, bananas, potatoes and little else. The doctor in the UK is testing for a bacteria or virus infection. I am unsure what to give him to eat as he is losing weight and has not energy. He is not in pain or losing blood.

How would you describe the severity of his diarrhea?:

- Severe, constant diarrhea

Has he experienced any other symptoms along with diarrhea?:

- Fatigue

What is his current hydration status?:

- Well-hydrated, drinking plenty of fluids

For ongoing diarrhea, especially when lasting several weeks, it’s important to consider dietary adjustments that are gentle on his digestive system while supporting a balanced Agni (digestive fire) in accordance with Ayurvedic principles. While awaiting medical results, certain foods and practices can help manage symptoms and support recovery.

First, introduce a simple yet nourishing diet. Moong dal khichdi, a mix of split yellow mung beans and rice, cooked with minimal spices, offers an easily digestible, nutritious meal. Its benefits include supporting Agni and providing energy without taxing digestion. Cook the dish with cumin and coriander to add subtle, digestive-supporting flavors.

Coconut water is another good choice. It’s hydrating and replaces lost electrolytes without causing irritation. Encourage your husband to occasionally sip warm water throughout the day to avoid dehydration – a common risk with prolonged diarrhea.

Include pomegranate juice, which Ayurveda regards as having astringent properties beneficial for diarrhea. Just ensure it’s consumed fresh and without added sugars. Also, when manageable, probiotics like home-made yogurt or buttermilk (diluted with water) can reintroduce beneficial bacteria to gut health. Avoid excessive quantities; small amounts are typically safer here.

Avoid foods that aggravate digestion: fried or oily foods, dairy products other than fresh yogurt, and processed sugars should be minimized in the diet. Also steer clear of raw vegetables and heavy proteins, as these are harder to digest.

Lifestyle practices, like ensuring adequate rest and avoiding stress, are similarly crucial. Gentle physical activity and mindful relaxation assist in nurturing Agni and enhancing recovery. However, always prioritize doctor’s guidance if symptoms worsen or new issues arise, given the prolonged nature of his condition.

Persistent diarrhea for three weeks requires careful attention, and it’s important to continue with the medical tests being conducted by the doctor in the UK to rule out infections. From a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, chronic diarrhea might suggest an imbalance in the Vata and Pitta dosha, potentially weakening the Agni (digestive fire), leading to poor digestion and absorption. While addressing the immediate dietary needs, ensure that he has access to medical help if the condition worsens.

For now, incorporating easily digestible, nourishing foods can help maintain energy levels and support digestive recovery. You might consider rice gruel (kanji) with a pinch of cumin and ginger — this combination can be soothing for his stomach and help stabilize digestion without irritating it further. Ensure that this is warm, as warmth balances Vata.

He can also consume moong dal soup, which is light and nourishing. Add a small amount of ghee — ghee is known to pacify Vata and can aid in soothing the gastrointestinal tract. Avoid spices, heavy oils, and fried foods as they can irritate the digestive tract further.

Encourage hydration with herbal water — boil water with cumin seeds, let it cool, and sip throughout the day. This can help restore balance and prevent dehydration.

If symptoms worsen or new symptoms like severe cramping develop, consult with healthcare professionals immediately. Assure that home remedies are supportive and not replacing necessary medical treatment.
