Hello, I‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ totally get your fear and doubt of going through the surgery. The advice of removing the sigmoid colon can be quite overpowering, especially when your symptoms are not that bad. Let me share with you a clear, honest, and realistic Ayurvedic perspective.

Summary of Your Concern You have been suffering from: Diverticulosis (for more than a year) Primary symptom: Bloating No sign of recurrent infections, bleeding, perforation, or severe pain You wish to know if gut healing is possible without surgery.

AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE

In Ayurveda, diverticulosis is described as: Pakvashaya Dushti (colon dysfunction) Chronic Vata aggravation Long-standing dryness, irregular bowel movement, and weak gut motility

Development of pockets as a result of losing both the elasticity and the strength of the intestinal wall

👉 This is not a disorder of overconsumption, but a disease of undernourishment + dryness + improper evacuation.

IMPORTANT FACT (PLEASE, CONSIDER IT)

✔️ The diverticular pouches cannot be “taken off” or reversed structurally by any medicine—Ayurveda or modern ones ✔️ BUT the gut can be healed functionally ✔️ You can be without the surgery if:

No recurrent infections (diverticulitis) are present There is no perforation, abscess, or uncontrolled bleeding The symptoms are from the mild to moderate range (such as bloating, constipation, discomfort)

Many people living with diverticulosis throughout their lives, choose no surgery, provided proper management is in place.

WHAT AYURVEDA CAN DO, FOR SURE

Ayurveda is centered around: Preventing feces from being trapped in diverticular sacs Making the stools soft without a purgation that is too forceful Getting rid of the bloating and flatulence Reinforcing the colon wall (Dhatu poshana) Prevention of inflammation and infection Delaying diverticula development

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT PLAN

1. BOWEL REGULATION (MOST IMPORTANT)Objective:

Soft, daily, and effortless evacuation Assistive means (to be personalized): Triphala ½ tsp (at night) Isabgol husk with warm water (not milk) Caster oil occasionally

Do not take strong laxatives or undergo harsh detox – these will make diverticula worse.

2. GUT HEALING & VATA PACIFICATION

1.Yashtimadhu churna 1 tsp with warm water twice a day after meal 2.Shatavari kalp 1 tsp with warm milk once a day 3.Dadimashtaka churna 1+2 tsp with warm water just before lunch

These substances help: Bloating reduction Digestive improvement Colon strengthening

DIET – IMPORTANT

AVOID Raw salads Seeds, popcorn, nuts (especially during symptoms) Dry, cold, packaged food Excess wheat and cheesecake Meal skipping

INCLUDE Warm, soft, cooked food Rice, moong dal, khichdi Stewed vegetables (lauki, pumpkin, carrot) Ghee in small quantity Warm water throughout the day 👉 Eating should be like oiling a machine, not scraping it.

LIFESTYLE

Fixed meal timings No suppression of the urge Gentle walking dail Stress reduction (stress worsens Vata → worsens diverticula) Adequate sleep

WHEN SURGERY IS THE ONLY OPTION Ayurveda does not substitute surgery in:

Recurrent diverticulitis attacks Abscess or perforation Severe bleeding Obstruction Conservative management failure In that case, surgery is a life-saving, not a selectable, option.

✔️ You can heal your gut function ✔️ You can prevent worsening ✔️ You can often avoid surgery ❌ You cannot physically erase diverticular pouches ❌ Aggressive “colon cleansing” is dangerous in your condition

Warm regards, Dr Snehal ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌Vidhate

You cannot empty or completely eliminate existing diverticular pouches – they are permanent structural changes in the colon wall.

But yes – you can heal the gut lining, prevent inflammation/infection (diverticulitis), reduce bloating dramatically, and avoid surgery in 80–90 % cases with strict lifestyle + diet + Ayurvedic support.

Diet – Must Follow 100 % (this alone prevents flares in most cases) Give daily: Moong khichdi + 1–2 tsp ghee Well-cooked vegetables (lauki, turai, pumpkin, carrot) Pomegranate, papaya, stewed apple Thin buttermilk + roasted jeera

Avoid completely (even small amounts trigger bloating): Raw salads, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, beans Wheat/maida, bakery, packaged food Red meat, spicy, fried, excessive nuts/seeds

Ayurvedic Medicines Bilwadi Churna – 3 gm + buttermilk after lunch Dadimadi Ghrita – 10 gm morning empty stomach with warm water Kutajghan Vati – 2 tablets morning + night after food Punarnavadi Mandoor – 250 mg morning + night Triphala Churna – 3 gm night with warm water + ½ tsp ghee

Daily Routine Vajrasana 10 min after meals Walk 30 min daily (slow pace) No straining during bowel movement

Surgery avoided in most uncomplicated cases if followed lifelong When surgery is truly needed (rare if no complications) Repeated diverticulitis with abscess/perforation Uncontrolled bleeding or fistula

With your current symptoms (only bloating, no severe pain/fever), surgery is avoidable – thousands of patients live symptom-free for decades with this exact conservative approach.

Start diet + medicines today – you can keep your colon healthy without removal.

Thank you for contacting Ask Ayurveda

I understand why you are worried about surgery and you want to look for another option.

Diverticulosis pouches once formed usually do not disappear completely. But the intestine can be supported and symptoms can be reduced with the right care. Many people live comfortably for years without surgery when there is no repeated infection or serious complication.

In Ayurveda this condition is linked with excess gas dryness and weakness of the intestinal wall. The aim is to soften stools reduce pressure inside the colon improve digestion and prevent inflammation.

If you mainly have bloating and no frequent fever severe pain bleeding or blockage then surgery is not the first step.

Eat warm freshly cooked food. Avoid raw salads cold food dry food fried items bakery food popcorn nuts and seeds. Prefer soft rice moong dal khichdi and well cooked vegetables like bottle gourd pumpkin carrot and ridge gourd. Chew slowly and eat at fixed timings.

Drink warm water through the day. Do not strain while passing stools. Do not suppress the urge for bowel movement.

Triphala churna half teaspoon at night only if stools are hard.

Dadimashtaka churna half teaspoon twice daily after meals with warm water for bloating.

Buttermilk at lunch with roasted jeera powder and a pinch of hing.

Kutaja ghan vati one tablet twice daily after meals with warm water for loose stools Bilva avaleha one teaspoon twice daily before meals.

Daily oil massage over the abdomen and lower back with warm sesame oil is useful. Follow a regular routine and avoid late nights.

If there is repeated attacks like fever bleeding or intestinal blockage then surgical advice should be taken But when symptoms are mild and stable Ayurvedic care will help prevent worsening.

🌿 Can diverticulosis pouches be “emptied” or reversed? - Diverticulosis means small pouches (diverticula) have formed in the colon wall. - Once formed, these pouches do not go away or “empty out” completely. The colon wall structure has already changed. - However, many people live with diverticulosis for years without needing surgery, especially if they manage symptoms and prevent complications. - Surgery (like sigmoid colon removal) is usually recommended only if there are severe complications (repeated infections, bleeding, or obstruction).

🥗 Gut-friendly diet strategies - High-fiber foods: oats, barley, lentils, cooked vegetables, fruits with skin (if tolerated). Fiber helps stool move smoothly and reduces pressure on the colon wall. - Hydration: drink plenty of warm water to keep stools soft. - Avoid triggers: red meat, fried foods, processed snacks, and excess dairy can worsen bloating. - Gentle additions: psyllium husk (isabgol), flaxseed, and soaked chia seeds may help regulate bowel movements. - Small, frequent meals: easier on digestion than heavy meals.

🧘 Lifestyle changes - Regular movement: walking, yoga (like Pawanmuktasana for gas relief), and light stretching improve gut motility. - Stress management: bloating often worsens with stress; pranayama (breathing exercises) can help. - Sleep hygiene: consistent bedtime supports digestion and reduces bloating. - Avoid constipation: straining increases pressure in diverticula.

Supportive herbs (general use in Ayurveda): - Triphala: mild laxative and gut cleanser. - Aloe vera juice: soothing for digestion. - Ajwain + warm water: reduces bloating. - Fennel tea: gentle carminative for gas.

Healing the gut and managing diverticulosis is a complex process that requires an understanding of your unique constitution and imbalances. In Ayurveda, diverticulosis can be seen as an issue of Vata imbalance, where there’s weakening of the muscular wall of the colon. Here’s a foundational approach that might help in managing the condition, though always, consultation with both an Ayurvedic practitioner and your healthcare provider is crucial, especially with major medical conditions requiring potential surgical intervention.

Balancing Vata dosha is critical in this situation. Incorporate warm, nourishing, and unctuous foods into your diet. Soups, well-cooked vegetables, and whole grains like rice and oats are preferable. Avoid dry, processed, or gas-forming foods, which could aggravate Vata. Ghee is beneficial for its lubricating properties — start with 1 tsp daily in warm meals.

Agni, or digestive fire, needs to be kindled without overburdening the system. Ginger tea is excellent - sip throughout the day, especially before meals, to stimulate digestion. Fennel, cumin, and coriander can be used to support digestion.

Establishing a stable routine is vital for Vata types. Regular meal timings, adequate sleep, and a moderate exercise regime are beneficial. Gentle yoga and pranayama, such as deep, belly breathing, can help reduce stress, a known Vata aggravator, enhance gut motility, and improve circulation.

Triphala churna, known for its bowel-toning and balancing properties, can aid in gentle detoxification. Consult with an Ayurvedic expert for tailored advice on dosage and suitability for your constitution.

Hydration is crucial, but avoid ice-cold drinks which can dampen agni. Warm water is preferable throughout the day.

If your condition appears unmanageable or symptoms worsen, prioritize following medical recommendations regarding surgical intervention. Ayurveda can be used as a complementary support, but should not substitute critical medical procedures when necessary. Regular follow-ups with a gastroenterologist and monitoring is key to ensure your health takes precedence.
