HELLO, Post meningitis hearing loss is usually due to damage to inner ear, so Ayurvedas role is supportive and restorative, alongside ENT/ audiology care UNDERSTAND THE IMBALANCE -Infection + high fever-> pitta aggravation -Nerve damage + hearing loss-> vata imbalance -Inner ear fluids affected-> mild kapha depletion So management focuses on -pacifying vata -cooling residual pitta -nourishing nerve tissue INTERNAL MEDICATIONS 1) BRAHMI GHRITA= 1/4 tsp with warm milk in morning on empty stomach for 3 months minimum =best for nerve repair and brain support 2) ASHWAGANDHA CHURNA= a small pinch with honey at night for 3 months =for nerve strength 3) GUDUCHI SATTVA= 125mg with honey once daily for 8 weeks =reduces post infectious inflammation 4) SARASWATARISHTA= 2.5 ml mix with equal water after lunch, once dail =if speech delay or cognitive dullness is present EXTERNAL THERAPIES 1) DAILY HEAD AND NECK OIL MASSAGE -brahmi oil -10 min before bath 2) KARNA PURANA If ear drum is intact -2 drops warm bala taila -2-3 times per week 3) OIL MASSAGE= -daily warm sesame oil massage -focus on head, neck ,spine -calms vata and improve nerve circulation DIET FOR NERVE RECOVERY -warm,soft, nourishing foods -cow ghee small amounts daily -almond paste soaked and peeled -moong dal, rice, root vegetables AVOID -cold foods -packaged snacks -excess sour/spicy items IMPORTANT REALITY If cochlear hair cells are destroyed, Ayurveda may -improve nerve vitality -support partial recovery -help brai adaptation but it may not fully reverse structural damage EARLY REHAB IS CRUCIAL -pediatric audiologist -Hearing aids/ cochlear implant evaluation if advised -speech therapy very important at age 4 Ayurveda works best as complementary support, not replacement TIMELINE EXPECTATION -mild nerve recovery= 3-6 months -supportive strengthening= 6-12 months -Progress should be monitoring every 2-3 months DO FOLLOW HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL THANK YOU

Because she is only 4 years old, the priority must be: Prevent further damage Support nerve recovery Preserve brain development (speech & cognition) Combine Ayurveda with modern ENT management Understanding the Condition After meningitis, hearing loss usually occurs due to: Damage to the cochlea Inflammation of the auditory nerve Labyrinthitis (inner ear inflammation) Possible ossification inside cochlea This is typically called Post-meningitic sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). ⚠️ Very Important First Step Before starting Ayurveda, please confirm: Has she undergone BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry)? Is cochlear ossification ruled out? Has an ENT discussed Cochlear Implant? If hearing loss is severe to profound, cochlear implant before age 5 gives the best speech outcome. Ayurveda can support recovery, but should not delay auditory rehabilitation. Ayurvedic Understanding In Ayurveda, this condition resembles: Badhirya Vata aggravated in Shiro pradesha Majja dhatu kshaya Indriya nasha due to jwara upadrava Meningitis causes: Severe Pitta + Vata aggravation Majja dhatu depletion Srotorodha in karna So treatment principle: ✔️ Vata shaman ✔️ Majja & Ojas nourishment ✔️ Nerve regeneration support ✔️ Gentle local therapy Ayurvedic Treatment Approach (Child-Safe) ⚠️ Treatment must be done under experienced pediatric Ayurvedic supervision. 1️⃣ Internal Medicines (Under Doctor Supervision) Depending on child’s weight and agni: Saraswatarishta (very small pediatric dose) Ashwagandha ghrita (micro dose) Kalyanaka ghrita Swarna prashana (if suitable) Brahmi-based formulations These support: Neural recovery Cognitive development Auditory pathway support Balance improvement 2️⃣ Panchakarma (Only Mild, Pediatric Modified) Karna Purana (Very Gentle) Warm medicated oil in ear Only if tympanic membrane is intact Only after ENT clearance Helps: Vata pacification Local nourishment Shiro Abhyanga (Head Oil Massage) Brahmi oil Ksheerabala oil (mild) Improves circulation Supports vestibular recovery 3️⃣ Diet for Nerve Healing Give: ✔️ Cow ghee (small amount daily) ✔️ Soaked almonds (paste form) ✔️ Warm milk with turmeric (if digestible) ✔️ Mung dal khichdi ✔️ Avoid dry, cold, packaged food This helps: Majja dhatu nourishment Vata pacification What Ayurveda Cannot Reverse If cochlea hair cells are destroyed, Ayurveda cannot regrow them. But it can: ✔️ Improve residual nerve function ✔️ Improve balance ✔️ Support brain adaptation ✔️ Improve cognition & speech response VERY IMPORTANT: Speech & Hearing Rehab Please start immediately if not already: Early intervention program Pediatric audiologist therapy Hearing aids or cochlear implant assessment Brain plasticity window is strongest before age 5. Integrative Plan (Best Outcome) Ideal approach: ENT + Audiologist + Speech therapist Pediatric Ayurvedic support

BERA was done 2 weeks after discharge from hospital and showed no signs of transmission. MRI done one day before discharge showed no cochlea ossification. ENT did assess and said that she would need implant or learn sign language. Hearing aids helped a little but not enough to depend on for learning languages.

It’s better to consult this with Ayurvedic ENT Shalakya MS

—After bacterial meningitis, it’s common for children to have balance issues and hearing loss. It’s good that her balance is improving. For the hearing loss, Ayurveda can help support the nerves and ear health with gentle measures like: Warm, soft, nourishing foods and healthy fats like ghee. Gentle oil massage around the head and behind the ears. Special medicated ear oils (Karna Purana) under expert supervision. – and some herbs also prescribed by us , but all will be possible only after proper evaluation and examination so plz visit to Ayurveda ent specialist for this or pediatrician he / she will guide u properly

Dear Parents, Thank you for sharing your daughter’s history. I truly understand how difficult this phase must be for you. Bacterial meningitis can sometimes affect the inner ear and vestibular system due to intense inflammation. It is encouraging that her balance has improved and that you have noticed some improvement in hearing over the past 1–3 months. This suggests that some neural recovery may still be ongoing. In many post-meningitis cases, hearing loss is sensorineural, meaning it is related to inner ear or nerve involvement. Early rehabilitation remains very important at this stage. Continued follow-up with an ENT specialist and audiologist is essential, including repeat hearing assessments when advised. If hearing aids or cochlear implant evaluation are recommended, timely action significantly improves speech and language outcomes. Ayurvedic Perspective In Ayurveda, hearing function is governed by Vata dosha, particularly its role in nervous system activity. Severe infections can aggravate Vata and lead to depletion of deeper tissues (Majja dhatu), affecting auditory pathways. Our Ayurvedic approach focuses on: • Supporting nerve nourishment • Promoting recovery of inner ear function • Balancing aggravated Vata • Enhancing overall strength and immunity Supportive Ayurvedic Measures 1. Internal Support (age-appropriate dosing only under supervision): Medhya and neuro-supportive herbs such as Ashwagandha, Brahmi, and Shankhapushpi Gentle Rasayana therapy to support brain plasticity If digestion is weak, mild digestive correction before starting tonics 2. External Therapies (only if ear examination confirms safety): Gentle head oil application (Shiro Abhyanga) Very carefully selected Karna Purana only if there is no infection or eardrum issue Mild pediatric Nasya in selected cases 3. Lifestyle & Diet: Warm, nourishing foods Adequate sleep Avoid exposure to loud sounds Structured auditory stimulation exercises at home Since she is 4 years old and still within a critical speech development window, early and consistent auditory stimulation is extremely important. If you are comfortable, please share her latest hearing test reports (BERA/ABR, audiometry) so we can guide more specifically. We are here to support your daughter’s recovery in the safest and most balanced way possible

✓Ayurvedic approach is supportive only , it cannot reverse severe sensorineural hearing loss Goal is to Maximize remaining hearing, protect cochlear/nerve function, reduce inflammation, improve balance & overall vitality. Never replace ENT/audiology care, hearing aids, cochlear implant evaluation or speech therapy. ✓Medicines Brahmi Ghrita – 3gm in morning with warm water/milk Saraswatarishta – 5 + 10 ml warm water twice daily after meals Anu Taila (nasya) – 1 drop each nostril morning (after light face wash) Shankhpushpi Syrup – 5 ml twice daily with water ✓Daily Must-Do Anu Taila Nasya – 1 drop each nostril Warm sesame oil gentle head & ear massage 5 min nightly (outer ear only) Legs-up-the-wall pose (modified – lying with legs on wall) 5–10 min 2×/day (improves cerebral circulation & balance) Speech therapy + auditory training – continue aggressively ✓Diet (easy & nourishing) Warm & light: moong dal khichdi + ½ tsp ghee, mashed banana, pomegranate, thin buttermilk + roasted jeera Avoid: cold drinks, ice-cream, fried, spicy, heavy dairy at night Add daily: ½ tsp soaked & mashed almonds + little jaggery ✓repeat BERA/Auditory Brainstem Response + OAE Cochlear implant evaluation if profound loss persists Do not rely on Ayurveda alone = severe post-meningitis hearing loss needs aggressive modern intervention Regards Dr Gursimran Jeet Singh MD Panchakarma
