No, do not repeat the 2-tablet dosage. In an elderly patient of 90 years, the body’s strength (Bala) and digestive fire (Agni) are naturally low, and Vata Dosha is naturally dominant. Giving two tablets of Zandu Nityam at once is a very strong dose for her age, which is why it caused loose motions. In Ayurveda, this sudden shift from severe constipation to loose stools is a sign of Asamyak Yoga (improper administration of cleansing therapies), which can quickly exhaust a 90-year-old and cause dehydration. Why is this happening? Vata Dominance: At 90, the colon is naturally dry and prone to Apana Vayu (the energy responsible for elimination) moving upward or becoming blocked (Vidhava). The Habituation Trap: Strong laxatives containing irritating herbs (like Senna or Sanamoohi, which is a key ingredient in Nityam) work by irritating the intestinal lining. While it clears the bowel once, its post-digestive effect (Vipaka) can actually increase dryness (Rukshata) in the colon, leading to even worse constipation a few days later. Recommended Step-by-Step Approach Instead of forcing a bowel movement with strong stimulants, the goal at her age should be Lubrication (Snehana) and Gentle Regulation (Anulomana). 1. Immediate Gentle Relief (Tonight) Instead of Nityam tablets, switch to a mild, lubricating remedy tonight: Warm Milk with Ghee: Give her a cup of warm milk with 1–2 teaspoons of pure cow’s ghee (Goghrita) at bedtime. Ghee provides the necessary moisture (Snigdhata) to soften the dry stool and naturally balances Vata. Alternatively (Gandharva Haritaki): If you have access to an Ayurvedic pharmacy, Gandharva Haritaki Churna (1/2 teaspoon with warm water at night) is much safer for elderly patients because it is processed with castor oil, ensuring it moves the bowels without causing severe loose motions or dehydration. 2. Dietary Adjustments Hydration: Ensure she is sipping warm water throughout the day. Cold water worsens Vata and constipation. Lubricated Foods: Add a spoonful of ghee or sesame oil to her khichdi, soups, or dal. Avoid dry foods like biscuits, toast, or heavy grains. Munaqqa (Large Raisins): Soak 4–5 Munaqqa in water during the day, mash them in the evening, and give them to her to eat. This is a very mild, non-habit-forming laxative safe for advanced age.
At 90 years of age, constipation should be managed gently and carefully. Since your mother already developed loose motions after taking 2 tablets of Zandu Nityam, it is better not to repeat the same full dose immediately, as it may again cause dehydration or weakness. In Ayurveda, for elderly patients, mild bowel regulation is safer: Give warm water frequently At bedtime, try 1 teaspoon cow ghee in warm milk if digestion allows Soft foods like khichdi, cooked vegetables, soaked raisins, papaya are helpful Gentle abdominal massage with warm sesame oil may support bowel movement If needed, only a smaller dose (1 tablet at night) may be considered, but avoid repeated strong purgation in very old age. Because she also has moderate abdominal pain and no motion for 3 days, please consult a physician soon to rule out fecal impaction or intestinal blockage, especially at her age. Ayurveda focuses on mridu virechana (gentle bowel correction) and maintaining hydration and Vata balance in elderly patients.
In a 90-year-old, repeated use of laxative tablets like Zandu Nityam should be done very cautiously. Since she already had loose motion after the last dose, do not repeat it immediately. What to do now: Give warm water frequently Add soft foods (khichdi, dal water, cooked vegetables) Light abdominal massage with warm oil Encourage gentle movement in bed/chair Safer gentle option: Triphala churna – very small dose (¼–½ tsp) at bedtime with warm water (only if tolerated) Important: Avoid strong laxatives repeatedly → can cause dehydration and weakness at this age If no stool >4 days OR abdominal pain increases → consult doctor for safe enema or stool softener option Regards, Dr Raghuveer (Ayurvedacharya)
Hello dear, as she had loose motion recently, naturally there is no more stool formation so she may feels constipated. Other than that don’t give laxative formulation frequently as it forces out digested or indigested food. That cause insufficient absorption of nutrition. Leads to weakness joint pain muscle pain etc issue. Focus on diet and lifestyle changes. Try to give her sufficient water and fluid intake. Proper digestion is very important for that try to eat on time, avoid full stomach eating and if possible 200 steps walk after each meal.Ask to Eat warm, freshly prepared home based food. Avoid staple, refrigerated, processed food and refrigerated water. Include if possible 2-3 spoon of pure a2 cow ghee per day in diet.,avoid excess tea/ coffee. Avoid late night dinner. And if any medicine ongoing look on that some medicine cause constipation as side effects. Don’t give any medicine-Ayurvedic or other blindly, if you want to give , please take under doctor’s guidance.
Hello, At 90 years of age, constipation should be managed very gently, because strong laxatives can quickly cause -dehydration -weakness -electrolyte imbalance -confusion especially after loose motions Since your mother had -3 days constipation -then loose motion after 2 tabs of Nityam -now again no motion for 3 days Safer gentle plan 1) Hydration give -warm water frequently -thin soups -rice kanji -coconut water Loose motion may have dehydrated her slightly 2) Gentle stool softening Option 1= Triphala churna= 1/2 tsp at bedtime with warm water =gentler than strong purgatives Option 2= 2 tsp warm ghee in warm milk at night =very useful in elderly dry constipation About Repeating Zandu nityam ZANDU If absolutely needed -use only 1 tab at bedtime not 2 again initially But because she already developed loose motions once, caution is important Diet The goal is to moisten the intestines, balance vata, and ensure soft, regular stools Fruits= ripe banana, papaya, figs(soaked), prunes, soaked raisins, stewed apples- natural laxatives, fibre rich Vegetables= bottle gourd, pumpkin, spinach, carrots, beetroot(cooked)- easy to digest, promotes bowel movement Grains= rice, oats, wheat, barley- light, nourishing grains Fats= cows ghee(1-2 tsp/day), sesame oil- lubricates intestines, pacifies vata Liquid= warm water, soups, thin moong dal, herbal teas- keeps digestion smooth, hydrates colon Spices= hing, ajwain, cumin, fennel, ginger- improves digestion, reduces gas and bloating. Food to avoid Dry foods= crackers, chips, popcorn Cold or raw food= salads, refrigerated drinks Heavy and constipating= cheese, red meat, fried foods, too much panner Refined and processed= maida, white bread, pastries Spicy or acidic= chillies, pickles, citrus in exces Avoid -proloned bed rest If possible gentle walking will be beneficial For elderly patients, the goal is -soft regular stool Not strong purgation A small daily gentle bowel regulator is usually safer than giving strong laxatives after several days of constipation. Do follow Hope this might be helpful Thank you
At 90 donot use laxatives repeatedly. At this age peristalsis become very week and eventually constipation on some days is ok. Include fibers in dinner. Stay hydrated. Give hot water eith ghee or hot milk with ghee at bed time, this is natural laxative action and will help. If this also dosenot work give Castor oil 2 tsp with hot water.
