how to mix indigo powder - #25897

Christian

I am really struggling with this whole indigo powder thing!! I’ve dyed my hair with henna before, and it went pretty well, but trying to figure out how to mix indigo powder has been a complete headache. I thought it would be straightforward, you know? Like, just mix and go! But I ended up with a gluey mess the first time, which was super frustrating. I’ve read about different methods, but I’m confused. Some say to mix it right away with water, others say to let it sit and do its magic first. My last attempt turned my hair more green than blue, and I was totally bummed out. Can someone please tell me how to mix indigo powder properly? Should I add anything else, like vinegar or something? Also, how long should I leave it on for the best results? Really, I just wanna avoid that green nightmare again! I appreciate all the help!

Mixing indigo powder correctly is indeed the key for achieving that lovely deep blue-black shade, especially after using henna. When dealing with indigo, it's important to understand that it's not as forgiving as henna, but with the right approach, you can master it. First and foremost, when you mix indigo powder, remember it needs to be mixed right before application, as indigo doesn't benefit from resting like henna does. To avoid the gluey consistency you mentioned, start by adding water bit by bit. Aim for a pancake batter-like consistency. Cold to lukewarm water is sufficient — boiling water can ruin the dye. It's essential to use fresh, high-quality indigo powder, as it's sensitive and weakens over time. Mixing won't require vinegar or other acidic agents; indigo doesn't work the same way as henna in terms of release. That being said, a pinch of salt can sometimes help in achieving a slightly darker tint. Before applying indigo, ensure your hair is well-coated with henna and the red tone is vibrant. If hair retains too much green, it usually means the henna layer wasn't saturated enough, or the indigo didn't develop properly. As for application time, it typically needs about 1 to 2 hours. Keep checking the color to avoid leaving it too long, as indigo can turn ashy if overdone. Wrap your hair in plastic to keep it moist, as indigo tends to dry out. After rinsing the indigo out with water (no shampoo for at least 24 hours to let the color settle), you'll find the color deepening over the next day or so. Also, if you need to tweak the outcome, applying another layer of indigo can deepen the shade without risking the green tones. With these steps, the indigo should blend seamlessly, preventing that unwanted green and leaving you with rich, deep hues!
