can bhringraj reverse grey hair - #25952

Kennedy

I am really concerned about my hair lately. I’m only 32, but I’ve noticed these strands of grey hair popping up everywhere! It honestly feels super frustrating because my younger sister just turned 25 and her hair is still that deep black, shiny and strengthens somehow. I heard a friend mention that bhringraj might help with this, and I was wondering, can bhringraj reverse grey hair? I’ve been looking into natural remedies instead of those chemical dyes that only cover it up. I tried an herbal oil with bhringraj, but I’m not sure if I’m using it right, or if it's just wishful thinking. I really want to know, can bhringraj truly reverse grey hair? Does it make any difference if it's used alone or in mixtures? My scalp is a bit dry too, and I’d love to get any tips on how to use it best. Please help, my self-esteem is sort of taking a hit with all these greys!

hello Kennedy, You’re absolutely not alone — many people in their early 30s start noticing premature greying, and it can be reversed or slowed naturally if caught early. First, let me explain what's happening, and then how Bhringraj and other supports can help. Why Is Your Hair Greying? In Ayurveda, premature greying is often due to Pitta dosha aggravation along with Rakta Dhatu kshaya (depletion of the nourishing blood tissue) and stress-related Vata imbalance. When the melanin-producing cells (which give hair its color) weaken or get overheated, they stop working properly. Factors like stress, digestive issues, low nourishment, and hot potency foods (like too much spice, coffee, fried foods) worsen the issue. Can Bhringraj Reverse Grey Hair? Yes — to a degree. If your hair is prematurely greying and not fully due to genetics or age, Bhringraj (Eclipta alba), known as “Kesharaja” (King of hair) in Ayurveda, can help restore color, improve scalp health, and even strengthen follicles. But for it to work, you need to use it both internally and externally, and ideally with supportive herbs and a Pitta-balancing lifestyle. How to Use Bhringraj for Greying Hair: Internal Bhringraj Churna – ½ tsp at night with warm water or ghee OR Bhringraj Juice – 10–15 ml on empty stomach in the morning External (Scalp & Hair) Bhringraj Taila (Oil) – Warm the oil, massage gently on scalp at night 3–4x per week You can mix it with Neeli (indigo) oil, Amla oil, or Coconut oil for better results Diet & Lifestyle Tips: Avoid spicy food, fried snacks, and caffeinated drinks (they worsen Pitta) Include amla juice, curry leaves, sesame oil, ghee, soaked almonds Pranayama: Practice Sheetali and Anulom-Vilom to calm heat and stress Stay hydrated, avoid sun exposure to scalp, and use mild herbal shampoos Full Supportive Prescription (Ayurvedic) Bhringraj Churna – ½ tsp at bedtime Amla capsule or churna – 1 daily in the morning Saptamrit Lauh – 1 tab twice daily after meals Bhringraj Taila – for scalp massage Note: If your scalp is dry, make sure to warm the oil and apply after slightly dampening your scalp. Leave overnight for best absorption. With consistency, many patients see results in 3–6 months: less greying, stronger hair, healthier scalp, and confidence returning. If you have any doubts, you can contact me. Take care, regards, Dr. Karthika

Bhringraj is a well-known herb in Ayurveda, traditionally used for a range of hair concerns, including premature greying. While there is no scientific guarantee that its use can reverse grey hair, it has been widely used to nourish and potentially darken hair. It primarily works by supporting scalp health, reducing dryness, and improving overall hair vitality. For an effective routine, try bhringraj oil application once or twice a week. Warm the oil slightly before use, and massage it gently into your scalp for about 15-20 mins. The warmth helps in better absorption and the massage stimulates hair follicles. Leave the oil on for a couple of hours or overnight before washing it out with a mild shampoo. Combining bhringraj with other Ayurvedic herbs such as amla (Indian gooseberry) can enhance its benefits. Amla is rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, promoting healthy pigmentation. You can make a paste by mixing bhringraj powder with amla powder and water, apply as a hair mask for 30-45 minutes before rinsing. For a dry scalp, adding a little coconut or sesame oil to your bhringraj routine can help retain moisture. These oils also have nourishing properties that can benefit both hair and scalp health. Avoid using hot water for washing as it can strip natural oils from the scalp. Diet also plays important role in hair health. Eating a diet rich in iron, proteins, and vitamins—especially B vitamins—can support healthy hair growth and pigment. Incorporating greens, nuts, seeds, and fruits such as dates, figs, and berries may support this process. Lastly, considering stress and lifestyle play roles in premature greying, incorporating stress-reducing practices like yoga and meditation might be beneficial in the long run. Consistency is key with such natural treatments. Results can take time to appear, so be patient and persistent.
