how to use flaxseed for hair - #36004

Harper

I am really struggling with my hair lately! It's been so dry and brittle, and I can't seem to do anything that works. A friend mentioned that I should look into how to use flaxseed for hair, but I honestly have no clue where to start. Last week, I tried a store-bought mask, and it just made things worse. I remember my grandma talking about natural remedies, like how to use flaxseed for hair health, but she never really explained it well. I've read some stuff online saying that flaxseed oil is great for moisture and shine, but I'm not sure if I need to use the seeds themselves or the oil, or what ratios I should be looking at. Also, do I need to prepare it in a specific way? I've seen recipes that say to boil the seeds to make a gel, but how long do I need to cook it? And what about applying it? How do you even apply flaxseed: on wet hair, dry hair, or both? I really want to revive my hair, but with all these questions, I feel overwhelmed. Really curious if anyone here knows the best way to use flaxseed for hair or any tips and tricks that have worked for them. Thanks in advance!

Flaxseed is indeed a wonderful natural remedy for hair care, been utilized for ages in various traditions, including Ayurveda. To help with dry and brittle hair, both flaxseed oil and flaxseed gel can be effective.

Start with preparing a flaxseed gel. You’ll need about 1/4 cup (around 60g) of whole flaxseeds and 2 cups (about 475ml) of water. Combine them in a pan and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce to a simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. You’ll know it’s ready when the liquid has a gel-like consistency. Strain the seeds out while the mixture is still warm using a fine sieve or cheesecloth.

To apply, let the gel cool to a comfortable temperature. It can be applied on damp hair for better absorption. Gently massage it into your scalp first to stimulate hair follicles, then apply down the length of your hair. Leave it in for about 15-30 minutes, allowing the nutrients to penetrate your hair shafts. Afterward, rinse out thoroughly with lukewarm water. No need for shampoo unless your hair feels particularly greasy.

Using flaxseed oil is another option. After washing your hair, take a small amount of flaxseed oil, warm it slightly by rubbing between your palms, and apply it to your hair focusing on the ends to lock in moisture. Alternatively, you can create a pre-wash treatment by massaging flaxseed oil into your scalp and leaving it on overnight, then wash it out in the morning.

Regular use of flaxseed, whether as an oil or gel, can enhance shine, nourish the hair fibers and help reduce breakage. Align your use of flaxseed with a balanced diet rich in omega-3 acids found in foods like walnuts, avocados, and fish, which support hair health from the inside. Remember, if your hair condition doesn’t improve, consult a healthcare professional to rule out underlying issues.

Flaxseed can indeed be a valuable remedy for dry and brittle hair, and you’re on the right track looking at both flaxseed oil and gel made from the seeds. In Siddha-Ayurvedic principles, we focus on balancing the doshas, and flaxseed is particularly beneficial for reducing the excessive Vata dosha, which often manifests as dryness in the body, including dry hair.

Firstly, let’s talk about flaxseed oil. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and can be applied directly to your hair. Simply take a small amount of oil—enough to coat your strands—and gently massage it onto your scalp and through the length of your hair. It’s best to do this before your shower. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, then wash it out with a mild shampoo using lukewarm water. This will help lock in the moisture, nourish your hair, and potentially improve shine.

For the flaxseed gel, you’ll need to prepare it from the seeds themselves. Start by boiling 1/4 cup of whole flaxseeds in 2 cups of water. Stir occasionally, and after about 10-15 minutes, you’ll notice a gel-like consistency forming. Strain the seeds out using a fine strainer once it cools down slightly. Store the gel in a clean container in the fridge and apply it to clean, damp hair as a leave-in conditioner. It helps retain moisture and gives a slight hold to your hairstyle.

Apply the gel to both your scalp and throughout the hair length, focusing on the ends, which tend to be drier. When applying, it’s better to do so on damp hair, as this assists with absorption. Ensure you don’t over-apply, as too much gel can leave a residue and weigh hair down.12

Incorporate these methods into your routine 1-2 times a week and assess how your hair responds. Increasing the intake of flaxseed through diet can also support hair health from the inside out, but do so gradually and with proper digestion in mind to maintain balance. If after a few weeks there’s no improvement, it might be worthwhile consulting a local Ayurvedic practitioner who can assess any underlying imbalances in your doshas that might be affecting your hair health more broadly.
