how to apply flaxseed on hair - #36186

I am a bit confused about how to apply flaxseed on hair, honestly. I read somewhere that it's super beneficial for hair growth and adds shine, but I just don’t know where to start! Last week, my friend told me about her amazing results using flaxseed gel. She said it's rich in omega-3 fatty acids or something, which is supposed to be great for hair health. Sounds awesome, right? But here's the thing, I tried to make the gel at home, and I’m not sure if I did it right. I boiled the flaxseeds for like 10 mins, but the gel wasn't as thick as I expected, it was kinda slimy. Do I need to strain it more? And when I did apply it, I just smeared it all over my hair, but it felt weird. Is that even how to apply flaxseed on hair? Should I be using it on dry hair or damp hair? Also, I was thinking, can using too much flaxseed gel actually weigh my hair down, or is that just in my head? How often should I do this? Sorry for all the questions, but I really want to know how to apply flaxseed on hair the right way because I need something natural that actually works! Thanks a ton!

Flaxseed gel can indeed be a great natural option for hair enhancement, providing nourishment and shine. To prepare flaxseed gel at home, begin by mixing around two tablespoons of whole flaxseeds with two cups of water in a pan. Simmer the mixture on a medium heat, stirring periodically, until it reaches a slight gelatinous, or slimy, consistency usually after 5-10 minutes. If your gel wasn’t thick enough, you might want to cook it a smidget longer, take care not to let it overcook. Once it’s ready, strain it while still warm through a fine mesh strainer or a cheesecloth, squeezing out as much gel as possible before it cools down and becomes too thick to strain.

For application, wash and towel-dry your hair so it’s damp. The gel will adhere better and spread more evenly on damp hair. Begin by sectioning your hair into manageable parts. Apply a small amount of the gel onto your palms and spread it through each section, starting from the roots and working out to the tips. Avoid using too much product, just enough to coat the hair lightly; otherwise, it may weigh your hair down as you mentioned. If your hair feels heavy, you could rinse it partially or fully to suit your comfort.

You can use it 2-3 times a week, depending on your hair type. If your hair feels sticky or heavy, reduce the frequency. This gel is not only rich in omega-3 fatty acids but also packed with vitamin E, both of which contribute to hair health. If you continue to feel discomfort or see no improvement using the gel, it might be worth consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner to see if it aligns well with your dosha type and specific hair needs. Remember, everyday hair care should match your hair’s natural state and condition for optimal results.

Applying flaxseed gel to your hair can indeed be beneficial, particularly for adding moisture, promoting shine, and supporting hair growth due to its rich content of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. To start, making the gel correctly is key, so let’s break it down step by step for you.

Begin by soaking 1/4 cup of flaxseeds overnight, if possible, to aid in the straining process. When you’re ready to make the gel, bring 2 cups of water to a boil, add the soaked seeds, and reduce to a simmer while stirring occasionally. Simmer until the mixture reaches a consistency that’s similar to egg whites, generally around 10-15 minutes. If it’s slimy and not thick enough, try boiling just a little longer, but mind not to overheat, as it can become too thick.

Once you have the desired consistency, it’s essential to strain the seeds out quickly while still warm, using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth—this can make a big difference in texture and ease of application. Let it cool completely before applying it to your hair.

Now, about the application: It’s best to use the gel on damp hair. This helps in more even distribution and better absorption. Section your hair and apply the gel from the roots to the tips using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, ensuring an even coat. Be careful not to use excessive amounts as it might weigh your hair down, especially if your hair is fine.

As for frequency, you might start with one to two applications per week to see how your hair responds. More frequent application isn’t necessary unless your hair craves extra moisture.

Regarding your friend’s experience of weird texture, this is common for first-time users; a little trial and error will help you find the right amount.

In Ayurvedic terms, flaxseed gel is cooling and hydrating, which can help to balance excess pitta responsible for hair fall and heat-related hair and scalp issues. Overuse may aggravate kapha, leading to heaviness; hence moderation is key.

If your hair tends to feel heavy, consider mixing the gel with a bit of your regular conditioner or aloe vera gel for a lighter finish. Don’t hesitate to adjust as needed, and you’ll find a routine that suits your hair’s unique nature.
