what is the use of hair serum - #36248

Jayden

I am really confused about hair care stuff these days. I've recently started using a hair serum because my hair feels super dry and frizzy, and I read somewhere that hair serum can help with that. But honestly, I'm not sure 🤔 what is the use of hair serum besides just making my hair look shiny? Do I need to apply it after every wash? Like, can it really help with split ends or is that just a myth? I was chatting with a friend who said using it daily is a must, but I've heard other people mention that too much serum can weigh your hair down, and I dont want it to feel greasy or sticky, ugh! My hair seems to get tangled more often after using it, and I’m just lost like, is this normal? I’ve tried different brands, but some don't really make a difference at all and others seem to work for a bit and then…nothing! Could I maybe be using it wrong? Should I be using other products alongside it? I guess I just want to understand better what exactly is the use of hair serum in a hair care routine, you know? Thanks for any insight because I'm kind of at my wits end here!

Hair serums are often marketed as a solution for a range of hair issues, primarily dryness, frizz, and dullness. Their primary function is to coat the hair with a protective layer that can make it appear shiny and smooth by reducing frizz and adding moisture. Typically, hair serums contain silicone, which is key to creating that glossy look many people seek. However, let’s look beyond the allure of shine. For your dry, frizzy hair, serums can temporarily improve texture by forming a layer over the hair strands, reducing moisture loss. They’re not capable of resolving split ends—those can only be managed by a trim.

While serums can help with tangles by smoothing out the hair shaft, it’s crucial to be mindful of how and when they’re applied. It’s generally recommended to use serum sparingly, depending on your hair type. Fine hair may easily become weighed down if too much serum is applied, leading to that greasy or sticky feeling you’ve mentioned. Rubbing a few drops between your palms and smoothly running your fingers through the ends of your damp or dry hair (but not near the roots) usually does the trick.

Applying serum after every wash can be beneficial but using it too often can lead to buildup, making your hair feel heavy. For best results, observe your hair’s reaction—some people might find once or twice a week sufficient. Also, you might complement the serum with other products suitable for your hair type, like a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Consider using Ayurveda-recommended herbal oils as a weekly treatment to deeply nourish your hair instead of relying solely on serums.

If serum application alone does not meet your expectations, it might be worthwhile to rethink other aspects of your routine including your diet, lifestyle, and stress levels. In Ayurveda, maintaining a balanced lifestyle according to your dosha can significantly improve hair health. Real change often needs a holistic approach rather than relying singly on cosmetic fixes.

Hair serum primarily acts as a protective coat for your hair, offering a layer of defense against factors like dryness and frizz. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, frizzy, dry hair often indicates an imbalance in the Vata dosha. Hair serum, especially those with nourishing oils, can help control this excess vata by smoothing the hair cuticle, reducing frizz, adding shine, and making hair more manageable.

Now, hair serums are not typically a cure for split ends—those need to be trimmed. However, using serum can temporarily improve the appearance of split ends by creating a sleeker look. This might explain why some serums have seemed more effective than others; how well they smooth the hair varies by formulation. Your friend’s advice about daily use isn’t universally true. Too much serum can indeed weigh hair down or give a greasy feel, especially if your hair is fine or has an oily tendency.

If tangles are a problem, ensure you’re applying the serum properly. After shampooing and conditioning, while your hair is damp, start with a small amount and apply it to the ends, working up to mid-length. Avoid the scalp area. It might be necessary to experiment a bit to find the right amount and brand that matches your hair type.

Incorporating other Ayurvedic practices can be beneficial. Consider a scalp massage with warm sesame or coconut oil once a week. This not only nourishes the hair but balances your doshas and strengthens the roots. Steer towards using mild, natural shampoos and conditioners to maintain doshic harmony. If you feel too overwhelmed or see no improvement, consult a professional for personalized advice, as incorrect product use might actually worsen the balance of your treatment plan.
