does olive oil help in hair growth - #36540

Penelope

I am really curious about something that’s been on my mind for a while now… My hair has been falling out way more than usual, like, it's kind of freaking me out. I've tried a bunch of products and even consulted with a few doctors, but they all have different opinions. Lately, I've been hearing that olive oil can be good for hair care, but does olive oil help in hair growth? Like, a friend mentioned that she used it on her hair and it made it sooo shiny, but I’m not sure if shiny = growth, you know? I've seen some articles about how olive oil helps moisturize and stuff but does it actually promote hair growth?? I mean, if I’m going to invest my time and money, I want to make sure it’s worth it. My scalp gets really dry too, which might be contributing to the hair loss, ugh. I guess I just want to know from those of you who really know their stuff — does olive oil help in hair growth? Or should I stick to the more traditional methods? Would love some real-life experiences or suggestions! Thanks!!!

Doctors' responses

Olive oil is often recommended in Ayurveda for its nourishing properties, and while it may not directly stimulate hair growth, it can create an environment that supports healthier hair overall, which indirectly may aid hair growth. Olive oil has a moisturizing effect, helping to manage dry scalp conditions that might be contributing to hair loss. It locks in moisture and improves the condition of hair follicles, which is especially important if you’re experiencing dryness.

In Ayurvedic terms, dry scalp conditions are often associated with Vata dosha imbalance. Applying warm olive oil can help pacify Vata dosha by providing necessary lubrication to the scalp and hair. This can prevent breakage due to brittleness, indirectly affecting how fast your hair seems to grow. Warm the oil slightly—a gentle warming, not hot—to maximize its benefits and apply it before washing your hair.

Massage the oil gently into the scalp with your fingertips, in circular motions. A few hours before bathing should be enough, or even leave it overnight for deeper nourishment if that’s suitable for you. The key is to be consistent; do this regularly, maybe twice a week, and see how your scalp responds over time.

However, if you are dealing with significant hair loss, olive oil alone might not be enough. Consider consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner to assess your dosha balance and offer more personalized advice. They might suggest other remedies like Brahmi oil blends, Amla hair packs, or herbal dietary recommendations that can support hair health from inside out.

Also, pay attention to your overall lifestyle. Ensure a balanced diet rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins A, C, D, E, iron, and zinc. Avoid excessive heat styling or harsh hair products, and manage stress with techniques like yoga and pranayama. Every small effort contributes to your hair’s health, which cumulatively, can make a difference in growth over time.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
