can we use olive oil for hair - #36560

Aaliyah

I am really curious about something and hope you all can help me out. I’ve been trying to find a natural solution for my hair, which has been all kinds of dry and frizzy lately. I've heard people mention using olive oil for hair, like, all the time—like it’s some miracle worker or something? But seriously, my hair is in desperate need of moisture! I’ve tried a bunch of store-bought conditioners and masks and they never seem to work quite right. Last week, I actually read about how can we use olive oil for hair and thought maybe this could be my answer! However, I’m not sure how to apply it. Do I just slap some on, or is there a special technique? Also, how often should I do this? And, ugh, I’m always worried about how it will feel after. I don’t want to end up with greasy locks, you know? I saw some tips online saying olive oil can help with scalp health too, which is great ‘coz I sometimes get itchy up there! Anyone had experience with this? Can we use olive oil for hair in any specific way, like as a pre-wash or leave-in treatment? Super confused and honestly feeling a bit hopeless!

Olive oil can actually be beneficial for your hair, especially if you’re dealing with dryness and frizz, but it’s important to use it correctly to avoid it becoming too greasy. In Ayurveda, oils are often used to nourish and strengthen hair, addressing various dosha imbalances that might affect your hair’s health.

To apply olive oil, you’d start with dry hair. Pour a small amount into your hands and rub them together to distribute the oil evenly. Gently massage into your scalp with fingerips, which can help stimulate circulation and promote a healthy scalp. Spread it through the lengths of your hair, focusing on the ends which tend to be drier. If your scalp tends to get itchy, this massage can also help in soothing irritation.

Timing matters when it comes to oil application. For maximum benefit, let the oil sit in your hair for at least 30 minutes or up to overnight if you prefer. If you’re worried about greasiness, avoid over-application and try to shampoo your hair with a mild Natura shampoo, maybe twice, to ensure the oil plus impurities are properly removed.

Frequency will depend on your hair type and needs. For very dry hair, doing this once or twice a week is generally sufficient to see improvements in moisture level and texture. If your hair tends to get oily quickly, you might want to scale it back to once every two weeks.

If trying as pre-wash or leave-in, lean more towards pre-wash. Some people do use it as a light leave-in, but only in very small amounts so as to not weigh their hair down. For your concern about greasy locks, remember moderation is key—less is more with oils.

Importantly, always take into consideration your overall body constitution or prakriti, as well as specific hair concerns. Proper diet with hydrated and nutritious foods, along with balanced lifestyle practices can make a big difference too!
