is bhringraj oil good for hair - #37213

Connor

I am really struggling with my hair lately. For the past year or so, I've noticed my hair getting thinner and it just feels so lifeless. Like, I used to have really thick hair but now it’s kinda flat and dull, you know? I’ve tried a few different shampoos and even some fancy conditioners, but nothing seems to work. A friend mentioned that is bhringraj oil good for hair and she swears by it. I keep Googling and see a lot of posts say it’s great for promoting hair growth and even helps with dandruff, which I’ve been having issues with too. I just don’t know if I should give it a shot, or if it’s just another one of those things that don't really do much. I’m curious whether I should use it daily or just every once in a while. My scalp is kinda sensitive, I don’t want to agitate it more, but at the same time, I'm so desperate for something to work. Is bhringraj oil good for hair overall? Can someone share their experiences or if they noticed any real change after using it? Would love to hear any advice or tips! Also, if it can help with that pesky dandruff, that’d be awesome too! Thanks in advance for any help!

Doctors' responses

Bhringraj oil is indeed regarded as a wonderful remedy for hair issues in Ayurveda. Known by its botanical name Eclipta prostrata, bhringraj is often dubbed the “king of herbs” for hair care due to its potential in improving hair health. Drawing from classical Ayurvedic texts like the Charaka Samhita, bhringraj is praised for its cooling properties which makes it effective in reducing pitta dosha imbalances—often a root cause for hair fall, premature greying, and dandruff.

For your thinning and dull hair, bhringraj oil can be beneficial as it is believed to nourish the scalp, stimulates blood circulation to the hair roots, and boosts hair growth. Regularly massaging the oil onto your scalp can strengthen your hair folicles, thus encouraging thicker and stronger hair. When using bhringraj oil, aim to use it 2 to 3 times a week for optimal results. Apply it on your scalp and gently massage in circular motions to augment the blood flow. Leaving it on for at least 1 hour or even overnight could provide deep penetration and enhanced benefits before washing it off with a mild shampoo.

For those with sensitive scalps, performing a patch test is crucial to ensure there’s no adverse reactions. Although bhringraj is usually gentle, overuse could make the scalp too oily, which might not suit everyone.

Like any treatment, patience and consistency are key. Changes might not be immediate, but over several weeks you should start noticing improvement in the texture and volume of your hair. Also, it may assist with dandruff due to its calming and antimicrobial properties, providing relief from itchiness and flakiness. However, if dandruff persists or worsens, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional as underlying issues might need to be addressed.

In addition, integrating a balanced diet that suits your dosha, enhancing your lifestyle with stress-reduction techniques like yoga or meditation, can also contribute to better hair health. Dandruff and hair fall might also signal imbalances in your internal system, thus adopting a holistic approach is likely favorable for long-term benefits. Just remember, while bhringraj oil is beneficial, addressing both internal and external factors will yield the best outcomes for your hair care journey.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
