is hair oil good for hair - #37258
I am really confused about this whole hair care thing lately. I mean, I’ve always heard that using hair oil is good for hair, but honestly, I don’t know if it actually works or if it’s just another trend, ya know? My friend keeps telling me how her hair has become so much smoother and grew faster after she started using this coconut oil every week. She swears by it and even says is hair oil good for hair, but I tried it once and it felt kinda greasy, and I barely saw any improvement. Like, do I need to use it more often or does it need to be a specific type of oil? Also, my hair has been feeling a bit dry and brittle lately, and I can’t decided if is hair oil good for hair growth or if it’ll just make my roots oily without fixing the actual issue. I’m worried because I dye my hair often, and I read somewhere that oil can protect against damage, but how true is that? Should I be looking into other hair treatments instead? I don’t wanna end up with more hair problems than I already have. Please help!

Doctors’ responses
Using hair oil can indeed be beneficial for your hair, especially from an Ayurvedic perspective, where hair oiling is a practiced tradition. Whether oiling will suit you and how beneficial it would be, can actually depend on multiple factors including your hair type, constitution (prakriti), and any existing dosha imbalances.
Coconut oil, for example, is widely used due to its penetrating properties, which can nourish the hair shaft from within. However, if your hair is already prone to being oily or you have a Kapha imbalance, coconut oil might feel heavy and greasy, as you experienced. This could also happen if the oil isn’t washed out adequately or if too much is applied. In Ayurveda, it’s recommended to apply oil, let it sit for at least 30 minutes, and then use a mild shampoo to wash it off.
Given your concerns about dryness and brittleness, especially since you dye your hair often, oils like almond or sesame may be more suitable due to their lighter texture and nourishing properties. Almond oil is rich in Vitamin E and can aid in making your hair smoother without leaving it greasy. Sesame oil, noted in classical texts for its warming and nutritious qualities, could also be helpful, particularly if your Vata dosha is imbalanced, which often results in dryness.
To ensure hair health and growth, regular application can support nourishment, but it’s the routine and consistency that truly counts. Apply oil 1-2 times a week, massage gently for improved blood circulation, and wrap your head with a warm towel to enhance absorption before shampooing.
For dye-damaged hair, incorporating a weekly hair mask of harmonious Ayurvedic herbs like amla and bhringraj mixed with your chosen oil might be beneficial, helping restore the hair’s natural luster and combating dryness. Always remember, while hair oiling is beneficial, also maintain a balanced diet, rich in leafy greens and healthy fats, to nourish hair from the root outwards.
Lastly, if the condition persists or worsens, consider consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor a regimen that caters specifically to your hair care needs.
