can olive oil be used for hair - #37261
I am really curious about something that's been on my mind lately. For the past few months, I've been struggling with dry and brittle hair. I noticed it got worse after the summer, probably becuz of all the sun exposure and swimming in chlorinated pools. My friends suggested different oils, and then one of them mentioned, "can olive oil be used for hair?" I wasn't sure, but I thought I'd ask here since I’m looking for some natural solutions. I've read that olive oil's supposed to be great for moisture, but like, I just don't want my hair to feel greasy or heavy, you know? I tried a commercial leave-in conditioner but it made my scalp feel weird, kinda itchy. I mean, my hair kinda feels lifeless and I wanna bring some shine back, like when I was younger! Also, if I try olive oil, what’s the best way to use it? Should I use it like a mask or something? I dunno if it would help with how tangled it gets or even how much frizz I see in the mirror every morning. And just to clarify, can olive oil be used for hair in any special way? Should I mix it or just slap it on? Need thoughts from you all! Thanks!

Olive oil can indeed be used for hair, especially to combat dryness and brittleness, as it is known for its deeply moisturizing properties. It can help to restore some of the vitality and shine you’re looking for. In Ayurveda, hair health is often an expression of your inner balance and overall wellbeing, and oils play a vital role in maintaining this balance by nourishing the scalp and hair strands.
When using olive oil for hair, there are a few practical ways to do so. You can use it as a pre-wash treatment, which means applying it generously to your scalp and hair about 30 minutes before you plan to wash your hair. This gives the oil time to penetrate the hair shaft without leaving a heavy residue. Just make sure you use warm (not hot) water to rinse it out thoroughly to avoid any leftover greasiness. Warm water helps to open up the hair cuticles allowing the oil to be more easily washed out.
You might prefer using olive oil as a hair mask, which can provide a more intensive treatment ideal for taming frizzy and tangled hair. Mix a tablespoon of olive oil with a teaspoon of honey (which even further enhances its moisturizing properties) and apply the mixture evenly throughout your hair. Once it’s applied, cover your head with a shower cap and leave it on for about an hour before rinsing thoroughly with shampoo. It’s a good idea to avoid applying too much oil, especially if your hair is fine, as it can weigh your hair down and make washing out more difficult.
If you worry about feeling greasy or heavy, start with a small amount of oil. For instance, begin by spreading a half teaspoon of olive oil between your palms and apply it evenly through dry or damp hair, focusing mainly on the ends where it gets most dry and brittle. Beware not to apply too much on your scalp if you’re prone to oiliness.
Using olive oil can also aid with detangling by smoothing the strands and reducing friction when brushing. You might find that combing becomes easier after applying the oil mask or treatment.
Remember, Ayurvedic principles suggest that the health of your hair can also be influenced by dietary habits and stress levels. So, it would also be beneficial to look into your diet—ensuring it is rich in hydrating and nutrient-packed foods, like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Managing stress with practices such as yoga or meditation may also reflect positively on your overall hair health. Let me know how it goes!
