aloe vera is a herb or shrub - #37334

Asher

I am dealing with this weird skin issue and I heard aloe vera is a herb or shrub that can help. A few weeks ago, I started getting these rashes on my arms and legs, and they’ve been itchy like crazy!! I tried a couple of over-the-counter creams, but nothing seems to work. I even went to the dermatologist, and they said to keep my skin moisturized and prescribed some steroids, but I'm not super keen on that. One of my friends suggested that aloe vera is a herb or shrub that could be a better natural option for me. I've seen it mentioned all over the place, but I’m curious – like, how should I use it? Should I apply the gel directly from the leaves of an aloe vera plant, or should I look for some cream that contains aloe vera? I mean, I don’t even know if aloe vera is a herb or shrub really makes a difference! Also, do you think it might be okay to use it daily? I read about all these benefits but want some real-life advice from people who might've tried it. I just really hope this doesn’t become a long-term problem... any help would be awesome!!

Aloe vera is often referred to interchangeably as a herb and a shrub, due to its varied use and its shrub-like appearance with thick, fleshy leaves. In the context of Ayurveda and practical application, aloe vera is indeed valued for its soothing and moisturizing properties. Rash and itchy skin can be very uncomfortable, and aloe vera can act as a natural remedy due to its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties.

The gel inside the aloe vera leaves can be very effective. If you have access to a fresh plant, you can cut a leaf, slice it open, and scoop out the gel. Before applying it, perform a patch test on a small area of your skin to ensure there’s no adverse reaction, especially since your skin is already sensitive. Once you’re sure it’s safe, apply the gel directly to the affected areas twice daily – preferably in the morning and before bed.

If fresh aloe is hard to find, look for an aloe vera gel with at least 95% or more aloe content to avoid too many additional ingredients that could irritate your skin. Creams with aloe might contain other compounds, so it’s best to keep it simple.

In Ayurveda, consistency is key, so using aloe vera daily can be beneficial, as long as your skin tolerates it well. If your skin shows signs of improvement and not further irritation, continuing its use might help in the long run. However, pay attention to changes – if the rashes get worse, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider.

While aloe vera may aid in soothing your skin, it’s crucial to listen to your body’s responses and maintain general skin care by drinking plenty of water and avoiding harsh soaps or excessive sun exposure. These steps not only support skin health but may also work alongside aloe vera to reduce irritation.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
