can we use curd on hair - #37369

Ella

I am really at my wits end with my hair lately. It’s super dry and lifeless, and honestly, I don’t know what to do anymore. A friend mentioned something about using curd for hair, and I suddenly remembered my grandma used to make this amazing hair pack with curd. I’m curious if this still works or if it’s just an old wives’ tale. My hair has this rough texture now, and I noticed lots of split ends too 😩. The other day, I tried an olive oil treatment which helped a bit but I’m looking for something more natural. I heard curd is good for moisture and some people say it can help with dandruff too. But like, can we use curd on hair freely, or will it make it greasy? I read somewhere that some folks even mix it with honey or something, which sounds interesting, but also like, what if it doesn't work for me? My scalp can be a bit sensitive, so I wonder if there's a right way to apply it? If it’s too heavy or something, I don’t want to end up making it worse. Any advice would really help! Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses

Using curd on your hair can indeed be beneficial, especially for dryness and lifelessness. In Ayurveda, curd is considered a nourishing and cooling ingredient, which can help with balancing pitta dosha when it comes to hair health. It’s known for its natural moisturizing properties, which can help tackle dryness and rough texture of the hair. To utilize curd effectively, make sure you’re using fresh, homemade curd if possible.

For your type of hair concern, mix about half a cup of curd with a tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of olive oil. The honey can enhance moisture retention, and olive oil adds extra nourishment, which you’ve found helpful before. Once you’ve mixed these, apply it liberally to your scalp and along the length of your hair. Be gentle around your scalp, since you’ve mentioned sensitivity.

Leave the mask on for about 20-30 minutes. This gives the ingredients ample time to absorb and start working their magic. Then rinse it off with lukewarm water followed by your regular mild shampoo to avoid any residue. It’s typically recommended not to use conditioner afterward, as the curd mixture will have already conditioned your hair. You can repeat this process once a week to help restore moisture and life to your hair gradually.

As for concerns about greasiness, using curd in moderation as described shouldn’t result in greasiness. Make sure to rinse thoroughly, though. It’s also notable to mention that individual experiences can vary, and while many find curd beneficial, it’s always a good idea to do a patch test on your wrist to ensure there’s no adverse reaction, especially given your sensitive scalp. Keeping regular trims to help manage split ends will also be beneficial alongside this treatment. If you notice any irritation or if the hair becomes heavier, discontinue use and consult a professional.
