is mehandi good for hair - #37637

Charlotte

I am really curious about something I’ve been hearing a lot lately. A few weeks ago, I tried mehandi for the first time on my hair after my friend swore by it for shiny, healthy locks. Honestly, my hair hasn’t been the same since I started noticing more breakage and frizz even though my friend said mehandi is good for hair. Like, should it really be making my hair feel worse? I did the whole application process, left it in for a few hours, and rinsed it out, expecting a miracle. They say mehandi is good for hair because it strengthens it and adds color, but I feel like maybe I used too much or didn’t rinse it out right? Not sure if my hair type matters (it's wavy and kind of dry), but now I’m worried I made a big mistake. I really just want to know, is mehandi good for hair overall, or could it have contributed to my hair problems? Any tips on how to use it properly or if I should avoid it altogether? Would love to hear any thoughts. Thanks!

Mehandi, commonly known as henna, is widely used in Ayurveda for hair care due to its potential benefits like conditioning, adding shine, and even reducing dandruff. It’s generally considered good for hair, especially when dealing with excess oiliness or seeking a natural hue. However, it’s crucial to look at your unique hair type and how mehandi is applied.

For wavy and dry hair, like yours, henna might be drying due to its natural astringent properties. This could explain the frizz and breakage you’re experiencing. Henna works by coating the hair shaft, which can give a temporary sensation of dryness, especially if not conditioned properly after application.

To achieve better results with henna for your specific hair type, consider blending it with moisture-rich agents. When preparing your henna mixture, you could add some aloe vera gel, yogurt, or a tablespoon of olive or coconut oil to enhance moisture retention. Post-application, always follow up with a good quality conditioner or even a deep conditioning treatment to replenish lost moisture.

If color isn’t your main goal and you are more focused on conditioning, you might want to consider mixing mehandi with leuki leaves (white henna) which are also known for their conditioning properties. Always ensure the mehandi is from a reliable source free of artificial colorants and additives, as these can cause damage or allergic reactions.

Also, rinse your hair thoroughly after applying mehandi, ensuring no residue remains in the hair, as leftover particles can contribute to heaviness and dryness. If problems persist, it might be worth spacing out the frequency of your henna treatments.

Finally, considering any existing dosha imbalances may help provide a more tailored approach. Since you have dry, wavy hair, it might suggest Vata imbalances, so integrating more hydrating and nourishing therapies could be beneficial alongsides henna use. If you continue experiencing hair damage, consulting with a trichologist or an ayurvedic hair specialist for personalized advice based on your prakriti (individual constitution) may provide tailored solutions. Remember, moderations is key when experimenting with natural remedies and consistency is necessary for noticing change.
