does serum damage hair - #37710
I am really confused about this hair serum I started using like a month ago! I don't wanna sound dramatic, but I feel like my hair is getting more brittle and kind of frizzy. I've always had healthy hair, or at least I thought I did, until I noticed some breakage and dryness recently. This all began after I added this serum to my routine which I heard was supposed to make my hair shiny and smooth. I read something online that said possibly “does serum damage hair?” I’m starting to wonder if this particular product I used maybe isn't as good as it claimed. I mean, I’ve tried to be careful, not using it every day but definitely more often than I should. Maybe I’m overdoing it? I also wonder like… could my hair type even be reacting negatively to it? On the bottle, the ingredients are kinda overwhelming. There’s just too much jargon, and frankly I don't understand half of it. Has anyone else experienced this? Does serum damage hair like mine? Should I stop using it altogether? I feel kinda hopeless, trying to fix my hair but maybe causing more issues. If anyone has advice, I’m all ears!

While hair serums often promise shine and smoothness, they can sometimes lead to unintended effects, like increased brittleness or frizz, particularly if overused or not suited to your hair type. It’s important to consider the active ingredients present in the serum. Many modern hair serums contain silicones and artificial chemicals designed to coat the hair shaft, giving the appearance of smoothness and shine. Over time, though, such products can build up, especially if you’re not using clarifying shampoos, leading to that dry, brittle feel you’ve noticed.
Ayurveda places a lot of emphasis on understanding one’s unique hair type – or prakriti. If you’ve generally had healthy hair, factors such as dosha imbalances, particularly Vata, could be at play here when disturbed, might lead to symptoms like increased dryness and fragility.
Firstly, it might be wise to pause the serum and observe if your hair condition improves. Given your description, it seems you’ve already noted a change after its introduction. In tandem with mainstream products, you might consider integrating Ayurvedic solutions like massaging the scalp with warm sesame or coconut oil before washing. Oils like these can help balance Vata, hydrate the scalp, and nourish hair roots. A weekly hair oil massage could also encourage hair strength and shine when done consistently, aiding the natural health of your hair.
Diet can play significant role too. Increase intake of hydrating foods, think of juicy fruits like grapes or oranges — and consider securing adequate intake of whole grains, nuts & healthy fats, they aid in promoting natural hair health.
Ultimately, reading the ingredients and also being wary of product claims is crucial. Your hair is unique, what works for one person might not work for you. If the issue continues, consulting more directly with an Ayurvedic physician could offer you personalized observations and remedies to help realign your hair health with your natural constitution. This balanced approach aligns with how traditional Ayurveda looks holistically at individual health rather than quick fixes.
