can multani mitti be used daily - #37938

Paisley

I am really curious about this whole multani mitti thing. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now for my oily skin, and honestly, my face feels great after the pack dries and gets washed off, but I'm not sure if I should be using it every day. Like, can multani mitti be used daily without any issues? Some of my friends say that it can really dry out your skin if you overdo it, while others swear by it as a daily treat. I guess I should add that I've got this annoying mix of oily and slightly sensitive skin — sometimes I breakout, and sometimes it feels super dry around my cheeks, ya know? I thought multani mitti was supposed to be this natural remedy, but I worry that if I use it too often, I might end up causing more harm than good. Oh, and I’ve noticed some slight redness after using it for the second day in a row, which makes me think maybe I should slow down? But then again, my skin has also cleared up a bit, so it’s a bit of a tricky situation. Do you think can multani mitti be used daily without it messing up my skin? I want to keep enjoying the benefits but don’t wanna go overboard! Any advice would be super appreciated!

Doctors' responses

Using multani mitti, known for its cooling, absorbing, and healing properties, can be quite beneficial for managing oily skin, but it’s important to approach it mindfully—especially considering your mixed skin concerns. Daily use might be overkill, and could lead to issues like excessive dryness or irritation, particularly if you’re already noticing redness.

Your friends aren’t entirely wrong; multani mitti can indeed dry out the skin when used too aggressively. It’s best to take a balanced approach: consider applying it 2-3 times a week instead of every day. This frequency is typically enough for benefitting from its oil-absorbing properties without stripping your skin’s natural moisture. If your cheeks are feeling dry, the dryness might get worse with more regular application.

After using a multani mitti pack, make sure to moisturize your skin. Look for a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer that can cater to both oily and sensitive areas of your skin. This can help you retain the good effects of multani mitti while minimizing the risk of dryness and irritation.

If unforeseen redness or irritation occurs, even when using it less frequently, don’t hesitate to take a break and give your skin some time to heal. Watching how your skin reacts is essential. You can also try mixing it with soothing substances like rose water or milk, which can alleviate any harshness.

Ensuring proper hydration and moderate use can bring the desired results without the unwanted side effects. Pay close attention to any persisting or severe reactions and consult with a dermatologist if they occur. Ayurveda supports natural methods, but each skin type reacts differently, so listening to your skin’s feedback is key.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
